Cons: Can't play MKV files that have compressed audio. If you download content that compresses audio you better be a darned good lip reader as WD left out support for compressed audio even though its part of the specification.
WD apparently is not going to fix this issue and are refunding consumers instead. At least they are refunding my money.
Unit also is very limited on support USB wireless adapters.
WD is very slow to fix issues via firmware.
Other Thoughts: Don't buy this if you intend to play downloaded MKV content unless you are prepared to remux the vidie/audio yourself!

Rating: 4/5mkv files on WD TV Live HD
Pros: Easy to set up.Plays sharp looking video.Plays a large selection of file types.
Cons: It gets very hot which may or may not cause a problem.Keep well ventilated.
Other Thoughts: Would not play all mkv files for me,until I shortened the file name to "name of movie.mkv".Apparently file name length affects whether the file will load or not.Drove me nuts for awhile but all is good now.

Rating: 4/5Great little media player
Pros: This little thing can play a wide variety of video formats, including .mkv files encoded with x.264. That alone made this a must buy for me. There are also a wide variety of video sources including networked computers and up to two USB storage devices. Plus, watch in HD using a component cable for up to 1080i resolution or an HDMI cable for up to 1080p24 resolution. The small size makes it portable and easy to carry around.
Cons: The device gets blazing hot, even when powered off. One day my video started lagging, and it was due to overheating. I now unplug my WD TV when I'm not using it, and I put one of those small fancy metal clocks you get at a wedding or something under it to act as a heat sink. Fancy fonts for .mkv subtitles aren't supported, so everything looks the same. Plus, more than one subtitle stream can't appear at the same time for some reason, so in anime openings and endings, you have a 1/3 chance of getting either the japanese characters, romaji, or the english translation every time the subtitles change. It also prevents subtitles from two different conversations to appear at the same time. The later subtitles overwrite the previous subtitles, so you have to follow the conversations quickly.
Other Thoughts: The user interface is very simple, so it's very easy to navigate. There is some lag in the UI, but it's responsive overall.

Rating: 1/5HAS FATAL FLAW
Pros: Very reasonably priced player for what it is capable of doing.
Cons: Many people buy this as an alternative to a HTPC and play MKV files with it. WD left out the ability to play compressed audio for MKV files. Further, WD is doing nothing to correct this even though the WD forums are riddled with complaints
Other Thoughts: Would rate this at 5 stars, but with the MKV bug, it should get a NEGATIVE start rating.
DO NOT PURCHASE ONE OF THESE until you verify WD has fixed this FATAL flaw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pros: Streams amazing 1080. Easy to use, convenient, and saves me from having to deal with codecs as it supports nearly everything.
Cons: Can be hard to downgrade firmware.
Other Thoughts: If you upgrade the firmware, they make it seem as tho its easy to downgrade. Its not. I just cant downgrade the firmware! I need to downgrade after installing custom firmware package.

Rating: 4/5Much Better
Pros: Decent streaming via usb or network, good graphic interface for navigation, mounting usb scanning is ok, media support format is excellent with right firmware!.
Small and compact enough for traveling.
Cons: 1) No netflix support yet! Available via the Plus model. 2) Remote needs LED Back lighting when to find buttons. 3) Failed to mount certain usb external devices due to firmware 1.20?* See other comments. 4) Needs an eSata connection for handling larger hard drives & moving large files, usb 2.0 is ok, but 3.0 or firewire would be better & more reliable.
Other Thoughts: I gave this unit 2 eggs when it failed to mount any of my usb devices. I contacted WD, found out some issues with firmware 1.20, be installing the default setup, I was able to regain functionality again.. Yeah! Only Seagat & Iomega External drives worked best with firmware 1.20 as for being seen? perhaps its a voltage/amp thing, all in all, upgrade your firmware carefully. Spend the extra $10-20 dollars more and get the Plus version, its far more superior and supports Netflix for streaming.

Rating: 3/5Beware of WD
Pros: It stream many formats and when it works it is great.
Cons: It doesn't support dvd menus, wd firmware updates are in short supply and instead of improving the hardware they just come out with new versions with the new features, alienating current customers.
Other Thoughts: Based on the fact that WD seems to focus on the next version when one is released instead of perfecting the current product is why I won't buy their product in the future and will look for a media streamer that the company actually cares about their current customer base.

Rating: 1/5Do Not Buy this piece of garbage
Pros: Small, looks nice, has HDMI and optical out, good price
Cons: Doesn't play many files period. When it comes across a file that it doesn't like which is almost all mkv's, xvids, wmv-hd etc it just displays a blue circle forever. You can try and back out of the file it's trying to play and then you are presented with another blue circle on any other file regardless of what it is. In order to get it to play a file again you have to completely unplug the unit, wait a few min's, then plug it back in. Rinse, repeat. It's not enough to just push the power button on the remote, the thing has to be unplugged. It's absolutely ridiculous and in no way user friendly to a non tech savvy person or to anyone really. I cannot believe how bad this thing is. After upgrading the firmware it gets even worse, I'd say 100% worse. I'd recommend finding a different media player or just building a cheap htpc to play your files. This thing will play a file every now and again, but it's trial and error and the thing seems to get confused very easy.
Other Thoughts: WD should be ashamed of themselves for putting such a bad product out for consumers to waste their money on. If it actually did all that it's supposed to it would be nice and I wouldn't be sitting here typing this up. I'd be watching movies in 1080p with DTS blaring through my surround system with a smile on my face. Very disappointed and sad actually, I was looking forward to watching movies tonight. Now I have to deal with return shipping and finding something that works.

Rating: 4/5Initial Reaction
Pros: The setup was a breeze. I liked the automatic firmware check, mine had two updates worth to go through before I could play with it.
Cons: So far none.
Other Thoughts: I've ripped my entire DVD collection (300+ with Handbrake) to the hard drive and serve it from my Linux server using SAMBA. This feels a little sluggish to me when previewing movies (1Gbps Hardwire network). I will need to tweak my server some I feel as I now have two media boxes and who knows whatever else being served off that little desktop!
