5 out of 5 eggsUSB 3 and I like it

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: - Works
- Slide cover for USB connector
- Key ring on opposing side of USB connector
- Low price (for 2014)

Cons: Slide cover leaves inside of USB male connector exposed to elements (dust, particles in pocket, debris, etc)

Other Thoughts: -The shell is sturdy (I torqued it using my hands and I dropped it from ~8' onto tiled floor)
-The circuitry seems efficient (I plugged it into my USB 3 port and added and removed a few ISOs totaling 14GB ~5 times throughout my day. The drive was warm, but doesn't seem affected, because I finished by loading my backup boot onto it.

1 out of 5 eggsTerribly Slow

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: Nice looking flash drive

Cons: Terribly slow drives. I bought four of these and they all write at ~8.5 MB/s. I now understand that they are "USB 3.0 compliant" drives but ALL USB flash drives are compliant with USB 3.0. This is sales trickery as my 5 year old USB 2 drives write at ~7 MB/s. Sure they are cheap but a USB 3.0 claim is hogwash. I, along with those I support will never buy Kingston again.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive!

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: What can I say, it's fast and does what its supposed to do especially for the price.

Cons: Haven't found one yet.

Other Thoughts: I've noticed it's average write speed is usually 45 megabytes per second, which for the price is pretty outstanding, especially considering I always see 16GB USB 2.0 drives that cost more than this.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: * Was formatted in FAT out-of-the-box, which means it was already compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux.
* It's USB 3.0, I accidentally transferred a 750MB of files to my USB key instead of my phone, and in a few secs it transferred half of that already, and that high transfer speed is how I noticed I was transferring my files at the wrong place.

Cons: * I could not attach it to a keyring because that kind of plastic (tunnel?) in the back is tiny bit too small.

Other Thoughts: I bought this USB Flash Drive after I broke my Verbatim USB Flash Drive by hitting it with my leg while it was in the USB port of my desktop computer.
This USB Flash Drive seems much more solid, but the fear of breaking it with my leg again is still present so I'm gonna try to avoid doing this again.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Linux Support

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: Kingston had good Linux support. One of the few manufactures that says so on the package.

I haven't had any issues with their thumb drives, including this one. Works great for what I use it for.

Cons: It might be a little on the slow side but I haven't compared it to other thumb drives. If I cared about the speed, I would have gotten a higher end model anyway.

The transfers seem to run very fast at first but slow done right at the end. I guess something like the data is written to buffer and then written to the flash is going on. Just something to keep in mind if you see a large amount of data transfer quickly and then it takes a while to continue.

Other Thoughts: I usually copy a few files that are a couple of gigabytes in size. It probably takes a minute or two. If you need a faster thumb drive, get one of the higher-end models.

1 out of 5 eggsNot USB 3.0 speed

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: You won't lose the cap

Cons: VERY SLOW. Whatever "USB 3.0 Complliant" means, it is certainly not referring to transfer rate (more likely the electrical implementation, which is irrelevant to the user). I get a write speed of 22MB/s, which would be considered slow for even a USB 2.0 device. Read/write speeds are not given in the specs or on the packaging. This is, simply put, a rip off.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer some clarification. The DT100G3 is an entry level USB 3.0 device that offers a 40MB/s read, 10MB/s write speed some drives may out perform this specification as you indicated. We do have performance USB 3.0 drives like out DTHX30 which offers 225MB/s read, 135MB/s write in USB 3.0 and is capped at 30MB/s read/write in USB 2.0 ports. For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

1 out of 5 eggscorrupted

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: large size

Cons: When I received the item and used it for the first time it showed lower then cappacity storage space. I didn't think anything of it until i used it again several months later and it scrambled and destroyed anything that was saved on it. Attempted repair / reformat several times before throwing it away as it was far outside the RMA period. which i had played with it more when I first purchased it.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGood product.

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: Works great. Hasn't corrupted a file on transfer yet.

Cons: No cons.

Other Thoughts: I was skeptical on the idea that there was no actual lid, but now I realize it's pretty convenient.

Also, this was no reason to dock a egg, but I could have skipped 3.0 and went for a 2.0 that was twice the size (32GB) for just a few more bucks. I honestly don't need the speed. I wasn't thinking about that at the time.
