For users looking to upgrade their laptops or configure a cost effective RAID array in their home or office desktop PC, the OCZ Onyx Series is an excellent starting point into the world of SSDs. This line provides the best of both worlds — the performance and advantages of solid-state technology at an incredible value. Based on the proven Indilinx controller, the Onyx delivers an enhanced computing experience with faster application loading, snappier data access, shorter boot-ups, and longer battery life. Onyx SSDs feature HDD-dominating access times, 64MB of onboard cache, and TRIM support to keep the drives at peak performance.

  • newegg Cool, quiet and durable operation Because OCZ SSDs have no moving parts, they run faster, cooler and quieter than traditional hard drives. Available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities, Onyx meets the needs of users looking for a quality boot drive replacement.
  • newegg Ultimate reliability Designed for ultimate reliability, Onyx Series SSDs have an excellent 1.5 million hour mean time between failure (MTBF) ensuring peace of mind over the long term. Onyx Series comes backed by a 2-year warranty and award-winning technical support for the ultimate peace of mind.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Onyx Series SSDs offer native TRIM support that can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

2 out of 5 eggsWeak

Pros: Faster than an HDD.

Cons: Wore out in less than a year with light use. Maybe good for a specific use but not worth it in the long run.

1 out of 5 eggsocz mlc solid state drive not good!

Pros: Not impressed worked well Never, this unit has been more harm then help and I would not recommend. I was hopeful that it was an ocz product but it has been a total and uter nightmare in my computer I am going back to spinning hard drives as this has left a bad taste in my mouth and has been a stinky outcome!

Cons: Horrid product! Does not work well and creates problems

Other Thoughts: Do not buy ozc sold state drives!

1 out of 5 eggs32gb OCZ

Pros: It was about what I wanted to pay.

Cons: This drive failed me twice during its first few months. It was being used in a custom router. I had good backups for the FreeBSD/pfSense OS but after the second time I have gone back to a mechanical HDD. Once loaded the OS accesses the hard drive seldom.

Other Thoughts: When I do replace with another SSD it will be with a Kingston or Crucial. Most of the memory I've bought over the years has been Crucial.

4 out of 5 eggsFast, but small

Pros: Fast, silent

Cons: 32 isn't enough space to install windows 7 64 bit. Sitting here with less than a gig of free space after drivers... spend the extra cash if your planning on putting only your OS on it.

1 out of 5 eggsMany Have Failed On Us!

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cheap, premature wear out in certain applications and usage patterns.

Other Thoughts: We are an OEM and have purchased many of these drives over the last two years or so. A majority of these drives have failed in our customer's systems, then we have to pick up the tab to replace!

Our customers who use their systems heavily have seen failures every six months or so. However, a few customers who don't use their systems as much have not required replacement, yet. Our application is running SQL server express and some of our customers are running full security scans every day. We see a correlation between intensity of drive use and these failures.

As the drives begin to fail, our customers report weird problems with Windows. Many are then frustrated when they try to repair Windows on their own and continue to encounter weird issues.

We were surprised to learn that all SSDs do in fact wear out, despite having no moving parts!

We have recently switched to the Intel 320 series expecting better reliability. You can download an Intel utility that will display the health of their drives and provide a "wear out indication". We will be instructing our customers to check this utility to gauge the health of their drives and plan for replacement when nearing the end of life.

SSD technology is surprisingly complicated, and I feel that Intel has the best handle on it. Not just SLC vs. MLC, the whole drive interface, operating system, drivers, and configuration, all contribute to the performance and longevity of these drives.
