5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: I've been running this drive for 6 months on a Win Server 2008 Hyper-V machine. It hosts our financial database as well as a few virtual machines. This thing is so fast. I'm going to put a couple Fedora Linux virtual machines on it too because it seems to take the load no problem. I love this drive.

Cons: Little pricy, but worth it if you load it up and make it work hard enough to pay for itself.

Other Thoughts: I'd buy it again.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive, Great Customer Serivce

Pros: Extremely fast. I handle a lot of data, this has sped things up a lot.

PCI-Express is handy if you've got extra slots.

Cons: Died after 6 months.

Other Thoughts: The RMA process with OCZ worked very well. I got a brand new drive within 4 days of them getting the old one. Thanks!

4 out of 5 eggsOCZ m84 Z-drive Review

Pros: Meets specifications. Installed in a Dell T7400 workstation running XP64. Using various benchmarks I'm seeing sequential read/writes in the 600-800 MB/s.

I am using this drive in conjunction with a 3D scanner (nextengine) and high end electromagnetics software (CST MWS). Modeling times are substantially reduced due to fast drive access.

Cons: The workstation I attempted to install this on was running an onboard raid 1 configuration. When I initially installed the card, my existing raid array was no longer being detected. Called OCZ tech support and they told me that my motherboard must not support multiple raid arrays and that I had just wasted $2k.

Luckily, I work at a public university with our ITS department literally the floor below me. They came up and showed how to run the LSI raid setup. Once that was figured out, I could make it back to windows.

I next tried to install the drivers for XP64 on the OCZ website. They didn't work. Called tech support again, they instructed me to go to the LSI website and find the LSI drivers. The LSI drivers worked.

Other Thoughts: For such an expensive piece of kit, I'm truly amazed at how much time I had to expend to get it to work. One their website they call this their mainstream series. Installation was not "mainstream".

Installation instructions in box are literally half a sheet of paper on how to push it into a PCI express slot. Nothing about possible problems with existing raid arrays. No drivers. Nothing.

Also, when I got to the windows driver problem, the tech seemed to recognize what was going on instantly and immediately direct me to the LSI website. They should seriously put up a technote or something describing this obviously well known issue.

5 out of 5 eggsFastest on the market

Pros: Fastest transfer rates on the market.

Cons: Price

Other Thoughts: The SATA interface still isnt on par with this puppy. 6 Gbit/s translates to about 750 MB/s (mega byte/s) the PCI express x8 is capable of 2000 MB/s far above what SATA technology is capable of. What needs to be kept in mind when researching SSD is looking closely at capital letters in transfer rates Gb/s (gigabit) which is 1/8 of GB/s (gigabyte) and Mb/s vs MB/s also 1/8 difference. So if you are waiting for SATA to come out and beat the PCI Express version you might be waiting a while.

5 out of 5 eggsIt flies

Pros: This drive is fast and stable, no stuttering so far. Some of the benchmark-based reviews you'll find on the internet will frighten you, but the Windows 7 "Experience Index," which is on a scale of 1.0 to 7.9, showed a 7.5 for my non-overclocked Core i7-960 processor, a 7.5 for my Corsair Dominator DDR3-1866 RAM, 7.8 for my Galaxy GeForce GTX 295, and 7.7 for this OCZ drive.

I built a new system with the components above, and my Asus P6X58D mobo bios saw this drive as a SCSI RAID device (which it should), Windows 7 recognized this drive immediately and started installing.

This system boots fast, launches large apps fast, sorts through huge directories of movies and images at blazing speed.

Cons: This drive takes up a precious PCIe 8x or 16x slot. This drive is bound to tank in value over the next year or two. I expect alternatives using the new 6 GB/s SATA interface to emerge in 2010. My mobo is ready, though! So nly buy this pricey board if you need the speed right now.

Other Thoughts: Don't just take it from me, look at the reviews for the 256GB version.
