2 out of 5 eggsfast but died after 1 year

Pros: blazing fast compared to a hard drive

Cons: it died after 1 year, was not even recognized by the bios, probably due to an interface failure.

2 out of 5 eggsDied within 18 months

Pros: Worked good while it lasted

Purchased March 2013, Died June 2014 :(

Cons: Expensive, especially considering it didn't last me long.

Other Thoughts: I installed correctly, used to play lots of great games and run my system with lots of storage capacity, extremely happy until it gave up the ghost unexpectedly last month.

Had not touched anything and the drive started to intermittently connect and reconnect, at first I thought it was just a cable problem but after trying other drives and seeing no issues I realized it was the drive itself that had gone bad .

I suggest purchasing an extra warranty if you're gonna drop this much money on a SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsSamsung saves the day again

Pros: Fast, large, stable. Perfect for server applications and for breathing life into older computers.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have switched all my servers over to these babies. I currently have eight of these in full production in my hosting environment and they have upped my reliability to over 99%

1 out of 5 eggsDead in 2 months

Pros: Worked fast and flawlessly while it lasted.

Cons: This drive died after almost 2 months of use. I'm just glad I didn't have anything important on it. I was using it for game installations.

Other Thoughts: I didn't see any signs of failure. One day I just turned on my computer and the drive appeared to be missing. Windows could see the drive in disk management, but said it wasn't initialized. Any attempts to get it working just resulted in I/O errors.

2 out of 5 eggsIs SSD ready for prime time?

Pros: It is fast, even when used with a SATA II adapter.

Cons: Not as fast as you might hope for when on a SATA II interface. Probably not much advantage in a desktop. Not as reliable as one would assume.

Other Thoughts: Drive failed in 1 year.

Waiting to see if Samsung will replace it.

I was able to get through to their SSD RMA person without any significant difficulty. They apparently use an "outsource" to do this.

Data recovery (if necessary) can be more expensive than a standard HD. In many cases, the recovery folks have to pull out each 32GB sub-unit and scan/reconstruct the files into a logical format. I am told this is a very common finding when these drives fail. Figure on about $10/GB.

What follows is just personal opinion...

SSDs may not be ready for prime time. Even though they are not mechanical, they can still fail spectacularly. (And quickly.) The warning signs, if any, are different than a mechanical HD.

This drive was used in a recording studio where large amounts of data are written and re-written continuously during multi-tracking. In this function, I wonder if SSD has any really significant advantage over a 10,000 rpm drive. Or even a 7200 rpm drive, for that matter. On our Windows machines, we used 15,000 rpm SCSI drives, and I could not see any practical difference between those and the SSD.

(For you photography buffs, I did find a much faster run processing a few thousand jpegs at a time using DXO.)

It is just my humble opinion that SSD (at this point) is probably best suited to laptops because of size, weight, and reduced power requirements.

I admit that I assumed better reliability because of the "no moving parts" design. Further research and experience have taught me otherwise. Apparently, these drives are very sensitive to the number of read/write cycles, as well as power fluctuations/interruptions.

If you use any SSD, follow the usual backup rules. And, I would recommend installing a cloned standard HD drive with all your programs, plug-ins, etc., so that you can immediately recover without having to do many hours of program re-installs. (Fortunately, we had this ready.)

I am not singling out Samsung on this SSD issue. They are a good company with great products. We'll see how the RMA thing goes. It toubles me a bit that (the street rumor is) you get a refurb-ed drive back in the RMA exchange with an unknown number of read/write cycles. Many of the super-techies on the Newegg reviews have documented reduced data transfer speeds over time.

If Samsung replaces it, I am going to put it on a PCIe adapter, stick it in a 16x slot, and see how much more speed I can get out of it over the SATA II adapter for the 2012 Mac Pro 12-core.

5 out of 5 eggsBest drive ever!

Pros: -Fast
-Plenty of storage
-Massive sale (when I bought it)

I had an OCZ 256 Gig Agility in my desktop before and I was using about 220gig worth of space on it, but didn't want to bite the bullet and go to 512 because of the prince. About a week or so late I saw Newegg had this on some crazy sale, pulled the trigger, and was at my door in 4 days for $279 USD total (hate me all you want).
Put it in my system and fresh installed everything and let my new rig destroy all games. BF4 load time are a joke now.

Moved my old Agility to my gaming laptop in place of the 7200rpm drive and holly wow. Boot times dropped (as you can imagine) and I got about an extra 1-2 hours of battery while not gaming now. All that on top of less heat and less noise.

My Desktop Rig:
-i7 4770k (no OC yet)
-H220 Swiftech cooler
-16gig GSkill Sniper 1866 ram
-Samsung 840 Pro 512gig SSD
-Gigabyte Windforce3 GTX780
-Seagate Barracuda 2TB (storage drive)
-CoolerMaster 932HAF case
-Creative X-Fi Soundcard
-I forgot my mobo /fail...

Cons: Maybe the price for the 512, but for the sale I got mine on I can't even say it was.

Other Thoughts: If you are debating buying this for yourself/someone with a normal HDD in their PC yet. Buy the 128/256 drive and it will seem like new life and been given to the PC. SSD's are now worth every penny and even if you get rid of your machine next year you can just take out the ssd and put it in your new one as well.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, quick, powerful

Pros: Solid performance, extremely quick boot times, comes with decent software for data migration. Boot time went from around 1 minute with my WD 10,000 rpm to 10-15 seconds. Definitely a great buy. I purchased it on sale for less $300 and has definitely gone up since.

Cons: Not truly a con, but handle with care. SSDs are very light, and have a "cheap" feel. Don't let this fool you, they're certainly not cheap.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest loading a fresh OS installation rather than using software to migrate an existing OS. Yes, you do need to reload programs and other software but it is almost essential if you're moving from a non-ssd. There are various hard drive settings you want to enable/disable during installation. Read a couple articles prior to installing for optimal settings.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat LT Upgrade

Pros: Very fast, improved boot up on my HP EliteBook 8640w from ~ 2 minutes to 15 sec. Have two drives (SSD and original 320GB 72K) in system and do a lot of numerical modeling (HEC-RAS, Flow2d, etc) and data processing (GIS, AutoCAD)

Cons: None, has worked without issue since install

Other Thoughts: Great price a Newegg
