This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 101 Gen 2 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Red) Model DT101G2/8GBZ

Pros: Cheap for what it is, decent size for storing files, transferring files and is also small, which I find as a pro, as it doesn't take up a bunch of room or feel bulky.

Cons: Obviously due to its price, it feels cheap. The metal piece can easily come off. The write speeds are slow. If you are an impatient person I'd recommend another product either by Kingston or another company as the write speeds slow down after the first few seconds.

I've found the average write speed to be about 1-2MB/s where as most USB 2.0's I've had transfer around the 10-15MB/s which disappointed me.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Chris,
I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the issue experienced with the DT101G2 flash drive. The DT101G2 is an entry level USB 2.0 drive and does not offer performance transfer speeds. If you are looking for a performance USB drive, please consider one of our USB 3.0 performance drives which are all backwards compatible to USB 2.0 ports. Like our DTHX30 which offers write speeds up to 135MB/s in USB 3.0 ports and 30MB/s in USB 2.0 ports. For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

2 out of 5 eggsMinor Issues

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 101 Gen 2 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Red) Model DT101G2/8GBZ

Pros: - Cost effective for limited, small scale use

Cons: - I/O issues writing medium sized files (1+ GB)
- Swivel case blocks adjacent USB connectors

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the issue experienced with the DT101G2. If transferring files close to or over 4GB in size an issue may arise due to the drive being formatted to FAT32 file system by default. If the drive is reformated to exFAT or NTFS then the limitation would be adverted. Other than that the drive should not have any issues writing files. We are here to help and can discuss the issue further to find a proper resolution. Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

5 out of 5 eggsFlash Drive is a good buy.

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 101 Gen 2 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Red) Model DT101G2/8GBZ

Pros: I've owned this flash drive for about 40 days. It will hold up to 7,424 megabytes worth of data (or 7.25 gigabytes). A bought a "Male to Female USB Extension Cable" to make the item larger since it is so small. (I am weary of losing small USB flash drives.)

I have it formatted in the FAT32 filing system. Write speeds are about 3 megabytes per second for files smaller than 24 megabytes. For files larger than that write speeds are about 1.6 megabytes per second.

Cons: It doesn't write as fast as a Serial ATA solid state drive but who expects write and read speeds that fast on a USB 2.0 device. Don't expect this drive to read and write like your hard drive and then complain about it on NewEgg.com

5 out of 5 eggsBest. Flash. Drive. Ever.

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 101 Gen 2 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Red) Model DT101G2/8GBZ

Pros: Let me start off by saying that I've had this drive for 5 days shy of 3 years (purchased 11/24/10). I've had a few other drives, but this is still the best. I came back to the product page because it had gone missing and I was considering buying another one. I don't use it much for mass storage these days as I have two 32gb flash drives.

I mainly use this one these days for installing OS and running Live USB. One of my two 32gb drives is capable of booting/installing OS, and has slightly higher R/W speeds according to tests, but runs OS slow and unstable. This 8gb runs everything flawlessly. It may take a bit longer to boot, but runs about as stable as any internal drive at USB 2.0 speeds!

For those reading, this drive IS compatible with Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool.

Cons: None! They make 32gb, 64gb, and 128gb versions of this flash drive?! Umm...I'll be right back...let me just buy them all.

Other Thoughts: Now, I'm going to buy either a 32 or 64gb DT101, but still keep this one for installing/running OS. Who still uses DVD drives?

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 101 Gen 2 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Red) Model DT101G2/8GBZ

Pros: Excellent speed for the price, considering it's a USB 2.0 device (which has a maximum effective throughput of 35 MB/s). Cheap, well-constructed. You can't ask for much in an inexpensive flash device, and this one performs admirably for the price.

Cons: I don't see any cons. Sure, it's not hitting 35 MB/s. But does anyone really expect this out of a USB flash drive at this pricepoint?

Other Thoughts: The first things I did when I got this is test the drive's performance, then reformat it. It came from the factory formatted to a 16K block size. I reduced that to a "standard" 4K and benchmarked it again. Using a 4K block size cut the write speed quite a bit from the default 16K. This surprised me at first, but some reading material suggests that many new flash devices use 16K internal pages. This makes sense, as less pages to access means a simpler, weaker controller can get away with doing the work, which translates to reduced cost. The benchmarks back this up. In other words, keep this device formatted with a 16K block size, NOT a 4K. This will maximize both performance and lifespan, because it translates to fewer internal operations being executed to map what the OS *wants* to write to what the controller is actually writing.

Performance using FAT32, 50 MB chunks, 4 passes averaged:

16K BLOCK SIZE
Seq read: 21.5 MB/s
Seq write: 19.2 MB/s
Rand read (512 KB): 21.5 MB/s
Rand write (512 KB): 9.1 MB/s
Read read (4KB, QD@1): 2.6 MB/s (630 IOPS)
Rand write (4KB, QD@1): 0.8 MB/s (200 IOPS)
Rand read (4KB, QD@32): 2.8 MB/s (699 IOPS)
Rand write (4KB, QD@32): 1.0 MB/s (237 IOPS)

4K BLOCK SIZE
Seq read: 21.4 MB/s
Seq write: 10.9 MB/s
Rand read (512 KB): 21.5 MB/s
Rand write (512 KB): 4.6 MB/s
Read read (4KB, QD@1): 2.4 MB/s (603 IOPS)
Rand write (4KB, QD@1): 0.5 MB/s (154 IOPS)
Rand read (4KB, QD@32): 2.8 MB/s (691 IOPS)
Rand write (4KB, QD@32): 0.6 MB/s (176 IOPS)
