5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good stuff. Upgraded from an AMD FX-6300, and the difference is phenomenal. This thing is fast, I mean ... really fast !

Cons: - Price
- Temps (the Intel stock cooler is a complete joke)

4 out of 5 eggsReview Update, Overclocking Below Average

Pros: Its still a powerful CPU that fits my needs.

Cons: I didn't win the silicon lottery. Not even close.

Other Thoughts: Ok so I initially review the CPU as 5 stars, and I stand by that for an average user. When using the 5 way optimization on my Asus Z97-A motherboard, I was able to manage a "software" overclock of about 4.3ghz. I am also running 16GB Mushkin Redline DDR3 2400 RAM with the XMP profile selected. This worked great. I did not record temperatures but had the stock CPU cooler.

Manual overclocking on the other hand was underwhelming at best. Now I am new overclocker, but I researched and used the tutorial on ASUS youtube channel (the one where the guy does something like 4.8Ghz). So I followed the video and was only able to get a stable OC @ 4.2GHZ using 1.2v (manual and adaptive were stable, so I stayed adaptive). I am also using a Cooler Master Hyper N520. My idle temps are 38-40C and with the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility my temps are about 90C, Prime95 is 100C. During gaming (Assasins Creed Unity, GTX 780 in SLI) I stay 58-65C. When I tried to overclock higher it was a complete failure. I couldn't get even 4.4GHZ to pass 1-2 minutes of Intel's stress test before getting BSOD. I tried voltages up to 1.325 before giving up, even at 1600mhz memory clocks. Even if I got it stable my temps would have been insane. Yes I could get a better cooler, yes I know Haswell CPU's run hot, but I think my chip is on the lower spectrum of overclock ability.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: Fast, low wattage usage, paired with a ASUS z97-deluxe, Intel 730 SSD 490GB. Corsair h100i. AMD 7950s Crossfire 8x 8x config. Running at 35c-47c(stress test all night)
I really see no need to overclock, but I'm sure I will take it to 3.8ghz.
It is 3.5 ghz stock but steps up to 4.3ghz when needed.

Cons: 16 lanes of pcie, whatever, I'll live.

Other Thoughts: This was a upgrade from a i7 860 2.8ghz - overclocked to 3.6ghz with a gigabyte GA-p55a-ud6 motherboard. This processor is rougly 64% faster than the 860 and it shows. Stability and speed, and the low power usage. 35w vs a first gen at 95w. I could have gone with the 4790k but this processor was matched with the mobo. Like I said, was looking for a stable build.

4 out of 5 eggsVFX use

Pros: It works and can be overclocked easily. After buying a new fan I set the multiplier to 40

Cons: it gets hot easily, I had to buy a Coolmaster fan and it now runs below 50C

5 out of 5 eggsSolid CPU

Pros: Solid CPU, stable temps and good speed

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This is a great CPU at a good price point. I have run this with FSX for over a year with no issues. Temps stay within normal range and CPU seems to be stable with a slight overclock.
