With the Wolfdale core Intel pours more power into a Core 2 Duo package. The 45nm process allowed Intel to reduce the power needed to 65W. Lower power means lower CPU heat, which translates to lower system heat and longer system life. They also packed more features into the chip.

L2 cache has been bumped to 6MB and the Front Side Bus has been pushed to 1333MHz. You can now use DDR2 or the hot new DDR3 memory for extreme performance. The processor also boosted memory access and execution speed with the Wide Dynamic Execution and Smart Memory Access. These combine to let the processor compute more instructions with more data per clock cycle. You'd better watch out; your enemies will be shooting back faster now.

Advanced Digital Media Boost has been enhanced with the addition of the SSE4 instruction set and Intel HD Boost. This will give your entertainment experience a boost with better audio and video processing. It will also help with speech recognition, engineering and scientific applications. Perhaps most important of all will be the boost to security with increased encryption power and speed.

  • newegg Specialized Dual-core Microarchitecture The Intel Core 2 Duo processor includes dual execution cores in a single processor to enable execution of parallel threads or applications on separate cores, resulting in revolutionary dual-core performance, breakthrough processor energy efficiency and exceptional system response when running multi-threaded or multiple demanding applications simultaneously. The innovative 45nm dual-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
  • newegg Intel Advanced Smart Cache Intel Advanced Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from fast L2 cache, resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel 32-bit architecture by enabling the desktop processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST may provide an excellent balance between providing power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Almost 2 years old and this thing still kills it. I hear everyone talking about the Core I5 toasting the core 2 duo but I dont see it. I was going to upgrade but got to test out my buddy's new I5-760 rig and was not really that impressed with it. It was slightly faster doing some tasks but nothing crazy that I need it for.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: These are still great CPU's for the price !

5 out of 5 eggsDON'T GIVE THIS UP

Pros: I LOVE THIS THING, It'll blaze through whatever game you throw at it.
I get 60 frames on Modern Warfare 2 with fraps on, and normally I get 250 (ALL HIGH)
DO NOT THINK TWICE ABOUT GETTING THIS AMAZING THING. But the stock Fan is a pain to install, better off buying your own.
You also get your own sticker and thermal compound (thermal compound is on the bottom of the cheap heat sink)

Cons: Stock Fan is Horrible, and will scare you when installing.
It works but its very cheep...

Other Thoughts: Best Purchase ever

5 out of 5 eggspure amazingness

Pros: I have had this Cpu for almost two years now coming up on december, and i have to say not once have i ever had issues, and as of about 3 months i have it stable at 4.18ghz on a thermaltake spin Q, idle-43c load-59c with prime 95, runs everything i could ever ask and puts my pc score at 7.1 when overclocked, used with my gtx 480 over clocked at 1600 and memory at 2000 and its max temp never goes past 80C overall the best cpu i have ever had looking for to the i7 extreme when the money is available

Cons: absolutly none what so ever (:

Other Thoughts: get it and take the time to fully learn how to overclock to a safe setting, and enjoy

4 out of 5 eggsIncredible chip

Pros: This is a dynamite bargain chip with very high overclock potential. It's not the latest and greatest, but definitely on par with some of the other chips in it's price range. Currently, it's running at 3.65 ghz stable on air cooling with an aftermarket Zalmann cooler. I recommend a high air flow case if you are going to peg it that high for long periods of time, but I still have yet to see it go over 31C idle at that clock speed. Super great product!

Cons: It's a little pricey for it's rating. There are similarly priced quad core chips but this one runs cooler and at less power (65w as opposed to 90w). Minus one egg for the price.

Other Thoughts: Perfect chip for the budget builder. I'm using this chip for an autocad rig for my wife and it scores around 1370 on Performance Test 7 by Passmark and in the 20k range on 3dmark05. Recommended!

2 out of 5 eggsHigh Failure Rate

Pros: Hardware is ok. No DDR3 Memory

Cons: The first one I recieved was DOA. I looked it up in other reviews it appears to be a frequent occurance.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking like a charm!

Pros: If your looking for a good plug and play part and C2D then this will do very nicely. It's been running in my rig for months now with no issues since I refuse to OC. That's why my son got my last rig and it's working good for him and I built that one 8 years ago on a 478.

I have had NO issues with this processor and stopped considering an upgrade to a quad because it's been working so well.

Cons: Still to expensive since the "i" series is out now and burning up the world!

Other Thoughts: OC'ing isn't for everyone, and should only be done by those with lots of bank! So that puts me out of the game.

5 out of 5 eggsTerrific CPU

Pros: 6MB L2 Cache
1333 FSB
Not a Core i3/i5 so not investment in RAM or Mobo.

Cons: Price, like always with Intel.

Other Thoughts: Good Core2 CPU. Lightning fast and nimble with reduced heat. The games I play don't support quad cores so this was a great investment.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great!

Pros: Clocks at 3.16.(cpu 1) 3.17 (cpu 2), faster than advertised. quick cpu, worked right out of the box.

Cons: brought down my experience rating (replaced my q6600) experience when from 7.1 (all but disc transfer) to 6.7 (all but disc transfer)

Other Thoughts: switched from quad core to faster dual core for games.
