New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed as Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Four “Piledriver” cores ensure rich, crisp video and seamless multitasking. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 4-core Vishera processor black edition is unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability. Great performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 4 Piledriver cores The native 4-core desktop processor ensures rich, crisp video and seamless multitasking. new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Stable processor. Decent speed for what I wanted. Worked great while my board still worked.

Cons: After 2 board failures I have given up. This processor never got past the burn in phase really. Since I only got to bench test it for about 15 hours after the first board was doa so I got a same board brand new and it had the same problem as the first one after only 15 hours of mild gaming and bench testing. Never even made it into my case.

Other Thoughts: I now has a hole through it because it's basically a paper weight now and I don't plan on going to another AM3 board so it's on my wall as a reminder. Processor never ran past 48c under full load for over an hour.

5 out of 5 eggsNoticeable Difference!

Pros: Excellent CPU for the price. While AMD is not Intel, they can certainly hold their own. Consistent CPU intense processes seem to top the CPU temperature at about 52 degress C.

Cons: Not sure if it is the CPU or the new Motherboard I got, but it seemed to take Win XP 64bit a longer time to load than on the other board.

Other Thoughts: I upgraded from an AMD Athlon 64 Dual core 4600+, which was pretty reliable, but I notice a huge difference when I play games. I wasn't sure if I was really going to get more satisfaction, but I was surprised... pleasantly so!
This is a good buy if you're looking for something budget friendly yet performs mightily!

5 out of 5 eggs$100 4g 4core FX

Pros: No problems, stock sink and fan seem good enuff -- but I'm no gamer, nor do I OC.

Cons: Not sure if it's the MB or the CPU, but can't seem to find a utility/program/app/etc... that agrees on cpu temps...

Other Thoughts: Extra $50 woulda got FX-8350

4 out of 5 eggsGood, Low Power CPU

Pros: I got this for my latest build, a new last gasp XP Pro 32 bit system which I wanted to have to run older software. It installed quickly and XP recognized all four cores. I have it slightly overclocked to 4.1 Ghz but I turned Turbo off in the BIOS.

What really surprised me was the supplied CPU cooler which is quiet and keeps this CPU running at low temps. I deliberately wanted a 95 watt CPU to keep this cool as my system is powered on almost 24/7.

Cons: Not a large cache on this CPU but for the low price is fine.

Other Thoughts: I'm running this on a new MB. An ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 which I bought from Newegg. I'm also using a EVGA 650 Ti video card (also from Newegg) which is also low power and quiet. This is all powered by a Corsair CX 430 watt power supply (Newegg, once again) which is plenty for this setup.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU!!

Pros: Good performance for price!
Easy to overclock!
Great looking box!

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: This is the 3rd FX-4300 I've used in a build. Great CPU for what it does. This one was used in a budget build for someone who is doing everyday computing, word processing, web-browsing, and some moderate games. Overclocked super easy to 4.6Ghz with slight voltage bump.

4 out of 5 eggsThe Ethical Choice

Pros: Four cores for high performance, 95W thermal design power is compatible with my Nofan solid state cooler, reasonable price.

Cons: Based on some benchmark results that I read, it seems that Intel has better performance per watt than AMD.

Other Thoughts: I compared the corporate cultures of AMD and Intel as posted on their respective websites. Based on my personal ethics, I chose AMD over Intel. I will not be specific as to the issue so as to avoid offending anyone.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Processor

Pros: This has been an excellent proc for me: fast, stable, reliable. I use it for work and play, tho' I'm not a gamer. After a half-hour of transcoding w Hahandbrake its temp is in the low 40 degrees Celcius. I have no complaints.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: A great processor, a great bargain.

5 out of 5 eggsBudget Gamer

Pros: Cheap and it does the job intended.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Just love how affordable AMD is and when you do it right its a solid runner. This baby with the stock fan is running in an Antec gamer case with Xfired Radeons 16 gigs of ram and can handle anything I throw at it with no hiccups.
