New microarchitecture, new level of performance

Piledriver microarchitecture, a tuned-up Bulldozer, has finally reached the flagship AMD FX processors (the new FX series processors are codenamed as Vishera) for improved performance and better energy-efficiency. Up to eight “Piledriver” cores ensure unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance. The AMD Turbo Core technology pushes your core frequencies to the most when you need it most. To top it off, like all other AMD’s Black Edition processors, the new AMD FX 8-core Vishera processor black edition is unlocked for fabulous overclocking* capability.  Unrivaled performance is not the only trick AMD has up their sleeve. Vishera processors are at a reasonable price point. (*AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.)

  • newegg New Piledriver microarchitecture Piledriver microarchitecture is the second generation of AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture. The internal core structure has been modified for higher frequencies even without any changes in the manufacturing process. Piledriver has a more precise branch predictor and a larger instruction window with ISA extensions FMA3 and F16C. The execution units acquired an enhanced scheduler and learned to process individual instructions faster, such as integer and floating-point division. And Piledriver microarchitecture delivers higher power efficiency compared with Bulldozer microarchitecture.
  • newegg Unlocked AMD FX processor with 8 Piledriver cores The native 8-core desktop processor delivers unrivaled multitasking and pure core performance with the new Piledriver microarchitecture. 32 nanometer die shrink was designed to reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. The AMD unlocked technology offers more headroom for your overclocking (AMD’s product warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking even when overclocking is enabled via AMD Overdrive software.).
  • newegg AMD Turbo technology The AMD FX Processors come equipped with AMD Turbo CORE Technology, a performance boosting technology that helps increase performance on the applications that need it the most.
  • newegg Amazing instruction capabilities Like Bulldozer, Piledriver has some amazing instruction capabilities. Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) increase parallelism tailored for scientific and 3D applications that use heavy floating point calculations. Floating Point Vector Multiply-Accumulate improves throughput and performance on many vector functions (integer and floating point). Advanced Encryption Standard noticeably increases performance on the latest encryption applications like TrueCrypt and benchmarks like PCMark.
  • newegg AMD Hypertransport technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link which helps reduce the number of buses in a system thus reducing system bottlenecks and enabling today's faster microprocessors to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.
  • newegg Integrated DRAM Controller with AMD Memory Optimizer Technology AMD FX Vishera Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports faster and low voltage memories and provides new Pre-Fetcher improvements and direct communications to each core in Dual-Core module (APIC registers in each core).

5 out of 5 eggsBang for the Buck

Pros: The CPU gets stuff done, and it multitasks like a beast. It's ready for the next gen of software to really take advantage.

Cons: none come to mind

Other Thoughts: I'm using a 3rd party LQ system, so I cannot comment of the effectiveness or noise of the oem fan/heatsink. I used the system intensely for 2-3 months of gaming. It's 4 months old total. Custom build. Here are the vitals:
Win7 (64)
AMD FX-8350 8-core 4.01ghz
ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 AM3+ AMD
OCZ Vertex Plus R2 VTXPLR2-25SAT2-240GB
Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200
SAPPHIRE 100311-3L Radeon HD 6970 2GB 256-bit
G.SKILL Sniper Gaming Series 32GB (4 x 8gb)
CORSAIR Hydro Series H60 CPU cooler

5 out of 5 eggsLove It

Pros: Good Fps during gaming A LOT better then my old intel 2 quad q6600.

Got it at low price of 180

Don't even need to overclock and still get good Fps avg on some 60 everything set to high.

Cons: Temps jump high real quick not even under full load

Gets hot even not overclock got h80 cooling it and Ac running next to it and still have 4 other fans blowing in air max temps 58c. got to 64 once

Don't want to even try to overclock temps might get even higher

Need a really good CPU cooler so another 50 plus dollars

Other Thoughts: This is a good Cpu the only flaw is the temps you get while gaming. Idle is like 12-19. Once using it jumps temp quick. highest i seen was 64 cause room temp go a little warm. My room stays always below 60c i keep it cool. Overall this CPU is a beast i love it

5 out of 5 eggsEight Cores of Greatness

Pros: Installed easy into the motherboard. (Gigabyte GA-990-FX-UD5) Recognized by the BIOS Update I ran before. Shows all 8 cores.

CPU: AMD FX8350
RAM: 32gb DDR-1333
MB: Gigabyte GA-990-FX-UD5
COOLER: Corsair Hydrcool H70
CASE: Antec 1200
BOOT: 1tb Segate Constellation 128MB Cache
STORAGE: 3x3tb Seagate 3x4tb Seagate
OPTICAL: LG BDR-XL
PSU: Antec 1100w
GPU: 2x 6670 HD (No Crossfire)

Cons: None really. I did notice some thermal issues but I'll explain more in other notes.

Other Thoughts: I'm cooling this with a H70 Corsair HydroCool unit, a lot of people say that this unit cannot do it and the H80 or H100 would be a better fit, which I might upgrade too in the future.

However with the H70 during idle I see temps of 18c and under full load it never goes above 45c. I didn't use the stock fan because every AMD stock fan I have owned under load sounds like a get engine taking off. I stuck with watercooling for this solution.

I think with an H80-H100 I could keep this ice cold and possibly overclock, even though I have no reason.

4 out of 5 eggsFX8350 + Asus Sabertooth

Pros: Very good multi-core processing;

reasonably cool operation,

overclocks well.

Cons: Not great in single-threaded applications. It is, however, adequate in the software and games that I use, like DCS World and SWTOR.

Other Thoughts: This CPU runs in idle the low 30s (Celsius) and high 40s under heavy stress, all at a mild overclock to 4.3GHZ.

It runs very well with a Kraken 60, an EVGA GTX 680 and the ASUS Sabertooth Gen3 motherboard.

I'll add a second video card when I can scratch up the pennies and see what that adds.

I see a steady 60 fps in SWTOR, with visuals maxed.

I see a significant improvement in 3D rendering under Poser using all cores.

For the money, I am quite pleased.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD never lets you down Lightning speed

Pros: OC to 4.2 standard speed- Turbo speed OC to 4.3 Used after market fan for very cool running. Has no problem running with 16gb of 21333 memory. All put on a new AsRock extream4 990FX mother board. Would advise a 750watt power supply. I went with EVGA 750w 4 rails 10 plug with nice long wires

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: No better CPU out there at any price. This chip is flexible and very OC giving with no failures.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty Good

Pros: Its fast, don't get me wrong, its a definite upgrade from my Athlon II x4. But it just isn't worth it paying for the best AMD processor these days, it doesn't run EVERY game on ultra with the super smooth FPS that you want. I would definitely do Intel once you're in the $200 range.

Also I can't comment on heating and noise problems, because I ordered a Hyper 212 Evo cool for it and better thermal paste, and I live in a cool area so it runs very cool.

Cons: Its not the best for your dollar, and thats what really matters, go for an i-5 or even an i-7 if you really want some crazy power.

Other Thoughts: Could be faster, and I'm not an Intel fanboy, I totally built my rig around AMD but it was to my disappointment. But don't get me wrong, its great for the everyday gamer for sure.
