Like the superheroes of old, the AMD Phenom II X4 955 streaks out of the night to lay waste to your enemies with four 3.2GHz cores that have dedicated L1 and L2 caches for each , and 6MB of shared L3 cache to handle really heavy loads or large data sets.

Memory transfers get faster than ever. HyperTransport Generation 3.0 mode allows up to 16.0GB/s of bandwidth. Up to 17.1GB/s memory bandwidth for DDR2 and up to 21GB/s memory bandwidth for DDR3 memory controller delivers an amazing total of 37GB/s of processor-to-system bandwidth. This unprecedented bandwidth is needed to feed the data hungry AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture cores.

You'd think that all of this power would be too hot to handle. Think again. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 works with CoolCore Technology to minimize heat while keeping power and efficiency up. Now the cores can shut down unused parts of the processor when not in use. This saves power and helps to reduce the amount of heat generated. This function is built in so there's no need for drivers or BIOS updates.

  • newegg AMD64 Quad-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. 5 out of 5 eggsBe Careful!

Pros: Wow, this blows my old Pentium III out of the water! What an upgrade. This chip can run anything that I throw at it, and only hardcore gamers will ever worry about framerates.

Cons: AMD still uses pin contacts, and they are easily bent. Just be careful and you'll have no problems with anything.

Can't really max out Metro 2033.

Doesn't compete with Intel's i7 line, but they're charging so much more for the 9xx series, it's like comparing apples to oranges.

Other Thoughts: My rig:
AMD Phenom II 955
ASUS M4A79 XTD EVO
WD Caviar Green 500GBx2 (RAID)
Sapphire Radeon 4850
[generic 24x optical drive]
OCZ ModXStream 500w
NZXT Lexa S

Runs like a dream.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect upgrade

Pros: 4 cores with unlocked multiplier. Though I have no need to overclock this bad boy, because it's fast enough for me. Worked in my Foxconn A9DA-S motherboard without a bios update. This baby screams.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is going in my gaming rig, which may be overkill for Diablo 3. My specs are:
Amd Phenom IIx4 955 3.2ghz black editon
Foxconn A9DA-S 890GX ATX Motherboard
4 gig G-Skill memory {2 gig dual channel)
Hitachi 1 terabyte HD 32mb cache 7200RPM
LiteON 24X SATA DVDRW Black iHAS-324-98
Rosewill Green Series RG630-S12 630wat 80plus PS
Rosewill Destroyer Black Gaming ATX Case

using with Soundblaster XtremeGamer PCI sound card
and will be buying a graphics card soon for this baby.

5 out of 5 eggsfantastic CPU

Pros: Replacement works like a champ. I can run three or four programs at once and not load this processor down, including watching High-Def video. I can run three very demanding programs at once including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Flash, and Adobe Fireworks and do very complicated graphics calculations all at once in all three programs and it still does not max out the CPU.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: AMD's RMA policies are great, I know because I had to RMA the first one I got.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD... Great buy for the price

Pros: Wow...

This is a really great processor. I have yet to find a practical application that slows this down. :D Anything run in Windows 7 doesn't slow it down at all.. well.. maybe benchmarks do. It is no Intel, but who cares! AMD has really impressed me with this. You can't beat this processor for its price.

Easy to install, and it stays very cool even with the stock fan! I don't think I have gotten above 43 or 44 degrees Celsius even when I am preforming a benchmark.

You really can't slow this thing down.

All in all... I would buy this again. In a heartbeat.

Cons: None at all. No problems whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: Really easy to install. The fan is... decent, but this is stock. I wouldn't overclock with the stock fan, but that is just my opinion.

Wanting to see what this does when it is overclocked. I look forward to good things. Thanks AMD!

5 out of 5 eggsVery powerful little CPU

Pros: Fast and powerful chip. Does everything that I can throw at it with ease - gaming, multi-tasking and every-day computing are all blazing fast with this CPU. Windows Experience Index score of 7.3 without overclocking.

A very good balance of price and performance.

Cons: Poor quality pictures in the manual, but if you've got any common sense it's not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: Comes with pre-applied thermal paste - not really sure if this is a pro or a con.

My specs -

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Buy

Pros: Price and performance blows Intel out of the water. Great CPU, fast and efficient. Heard it's easy to OC and gives equally great/better performance, but I haven't yet. Stays cool and quiet even with stock fan/heatsink. Gets a 7.3 Windows rating!

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: MoBo: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO 790X

I'm a design student who built this computer for graphics/color including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Flash animations/Dreamweaver, 2D and 3D complex renderings with AutoCAD, Sketchup, Vectorworks, etc. and general computing for research and assignments... I have completed the build about 2 weeks ago, and I am beyond pleased so far!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Used this processor for my first build and it hit the perfect price to performance ratio.

Cons: The stock cpu cooler that comes with it is extremely noisy. I can't tell if its defective or not but it's by far the loudest thing in my system right now. It's a small nuisance but not enough to take off any eggs since I saved a lot of money by choosing an AMD platform over intel.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome and Cheap.

Pros: Compared to equivalent Intel CPUs, the 955 is cheaper, and definetly gets the Job done. Been running at 3.4ghz for about 3 weeks now, and had it pushed to 3.9ghz and didn't break a sweat. No need to push high, the 955 handles everything I through at it. I noticed a huge jump in video encoding from my AMD 9950 BE. Went from 20 minutes for encode and burn 1 dvd to 12 minutes.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE @ 3.4Ghz
4 Gigs Kingston HyperX PC 8500
MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum Mobo

Working nicely in this setup Cant wait to slap this in my Crosshair IV

5 out of 5 eggsOverclockable under certain conditions

Pros: Overclocks in 32 bit mode. Got it up to 3.5Ghz with the basic ASUS overclocking profile.

Cons: Not overclockable in 64 bit mode. If you need 64 bits for something like image processing, don't bother with overclockable memory but spend the extra money on more expensive CPUs.

Other Thoughts: They're all probably like this, overclocking in 32 bits but not 64 bits.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: This processer is very fast. I have paired this with a ATI 5830 and Asus M478TA-E and it rocks. When you stack up what get to the competition there is no comparison. I saved hundreds of dollars and could not be happier. I used to use the competitor but, no more. Dollar for dollar you get more. I built it, plugged it in and it worked. No issues at all.

Cons: None
