Like the superheroes of old, the AMD Phenom II streaks out of the night to lay waste to your enemies with 2.8GHz quad cores that have L1 and L2 caches for each core, and 6MB of L3 cache to be shared to handle really heavy loads or large data sets.

Memory transfers get faster than ever. HyperTransport Generation 3.0 mode allows up to 16.0GB/s of bandwidth. Up to 17.1GB/s memory bandwidth for DDR2 delivers an amazing total of 37GB/s of processor-to-system bandwidth. This unprecedented bandwidth is needed to feed the data hungry AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture cores.

You'd think that all of this power would be too hot to handle. Think again. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 technology works with CoolCore Technology to minimize heat while keeping power and efficiency up. Now the cores can shut down unused parts of the processor when not in use. This saves power and helps to reduce the amount of heat generated. This function is built in so there's no need for drivers or BIOS updates.

  • newegg AMD64 Quad-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Quad-Core technology, four complete processor cores on a single die run at the same frequency to deliver exceptional multi-tasking power, allowing users to surge through the most demanding processing loads, including advanced multitasking, critical business productivity, complicated visual design and modeling, serious gaming, and visually stunning digital media and entertainment.
  • newegg Integrated DDR2 DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Phenom II X4 Quad-Core processor is integrated with DDR2 DRAM memory controller capable of supporting registered and ECC DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT 3.0 technology the AMD Phenom II X4 quad-Core processor enjoys 4000MHz system bus speeds.
  • newegg AMD Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 technology is an enhanced solution available on AMD Phenom II X4 processor-based systems that can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.
  • newegg AMD Virtualization Virtualization on desktop computers allows a single PC to act like multiple virtual machines. AMD Virtualization can enable client computers to seamlessly support multiple operating environments. And it also helps make it easier for PC enthusiasts to upgrade and maintain their PCs through emulation.
  • newegg AMD CoolCore Technology AMD CoolCore Technology reduces processor energy consumption by turning off unused parts of the processor. Power can be switched on or off within a single clock cycle so that energy is saved without compromising performance.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD FTW

Pros: This chip is phenomenal! Go with Phenom. Built my system in 2009 and this chip is still keeping up with all the upgrades that I have done to my rig.
It also plays most of the newer games fine around 40-70 fps. I pre-ordered ESO and ran a system check and my rig passed with flying colors.

Cons: I can't go to space with it.

5 out of 5 eggsSoild

Pros: About the fastest you can get without going to DDR3 memory

Came with decent stock cooler, runs about 5c lower than the Phenom x3 it replaced.

Cons: consumes more power than some of the other CPU's

hmmm, price dropped $30 a week after I bought it, other than that, its good.

5 out of 5 eggsWhoops

Pros: I forgot to add that whatever the trick is they're doing to ddr2 ram actually works, though I don't get it entirely.. My "Windows index rating" went from 7 to 7.4 on my ram after I refreashed it..

Cons: n/a

Other Thoughts: @Villageguy you should never have to "push" a CPU into place, it's latched into place by the little lever that's next to the slot.. It should just 'drop' in, if it doesn't, your doing something wrong..

AKA you bought the wrong one for the mobo?

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: Great chip for my old socket 2, it'll breath a couple more years of life into my computer before it's time to scrap the mobo and build a new one.

Cons: The fan is a -1 egg, it's a really nice high proformance copper pipe fan and it keeps the CPU cool. It's quiet when the computer is under light load

but when it's under very heavy load like playing a high end videogame, it sometimes spins up load enough to sound like a jet is trying to land in my livingroom..

Other Thoughts: It's a shame I glued the cooler to my CPU with artic cement, it'll probably be okay if I just replace the -fan- on the otherwise nice cooler...

1 out of 5 eggsWrong CPU For Motherboard

Pros: Good CPU for the price

Cons: I never got to actually get the CPU working in the motherboard I had bought from Newegg. First off, ASUS told me it would work in the M4A89GTD PRO/USB3. CPUs are not returnable but Newegg made an exception. I checked the pins on the CPU before returning. Newegg notfied that pins were bent. After getting back the CPU noticed 3 pins were bent that were not prior to returning for credit. Got news is that AMD will replace the CPU but now stuck with a CPU and no compatible motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Newegg has been great in returning items but I question how the pins got bent.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU!

Pros: Price is great now :-) Quad Core that is a little better then the Intel Q line up (but not better than the ones with 12MB cache) Works with my DDR2. Overall very speedy.

Cons: non at this price level.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good cpu

Pros: It comes with a petty nice heat sink and fan. My case isn't the best with air flow but this processor runs pretty cool. Very fast!

Cons: None yet...

Other Thoughts: I went from an amd x2 4000 and wow what a difference. This cpu has extended the life of my motherboard and my geforce 8800 gtx. I'm now able to max video settings in start craft 2 and fallout new vegas and I even reinstalled crysis to test it out and yes all graphics are maxed except AA is set to 2, I'm sure once I upgrade my 8800 gtx I'll be able to max everything though.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

Pros: Working good so far, idles around 43c with MB temp of 46c.

Runs Black Ops on Max settings, load times in multiplayer is super fast.

Cons: Does run a lil warm at 43c idle, normal? Most likely, cant deduct eggs for it.

Other Thoughts: Recommended processor in conjunction with ASUS M4A785-M Motherboard which still uses DDR2 ram, no need to get DDR3 compatible MB as the performance to price of DDR3 ram aint worth it. Never tried the Over clocking on this yet, like to try to get 3.1 ghz with a 5th core unlocked though.
