Like the superheroes of old, the AMD Phenom streaks out of the night to lay waste to your enemies. The 9950 Agena has 4 cores that run at 2.6GHz. The quad-core Phenom processor has 128KB L1 and 512KB L2 caches for each core and a total of 2MB L3 cache to buffer really heavy data flows.

Memory transfers get faster than ever. HyperTransport Generation 3.0 mode allows up to 16.0GB/s of bandwidth. Add that to the 17.1GB/s from the integrated memory controller for an amazing 33.1GB/s of memory bandwidth. This unprecedented bandwidth is needed to feed the data hungry AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture cores.

You'd think that all of this power could get too hot to handle. Think again. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology works with CoolCore Technology to minimize heat while keeping power and efficiency up. Now the cores can shut down unused parts of the processor when not in use. This saves power and helps to reduce the amount of heat generated. This function is built in so there's no need for drivers or BIOS updates.

  • newegg AMD Virtualization Virtualization on desktop computers allows a single PC to act like multiple virtual machines. AMD Virtualization can enable client computers to seamlessly support multiple operating environments. And it also helps make it easier for PC enthusiasts to upgrade and maintain their PCs through emulation.
  • newegg AMD CoolCore Technology AMD CoolCore Technology reduces processor energy consumption by turning off unused parts of the processor. Power can be switched on or off within a single clock cycle so that energy is saved without compromising performance.
  • newegg AMD Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology is an innovative solution available on AMD Athlon 64 processor-based systems that can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.
  • newegg Integrated DDR2 DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Phenom 9950 Agena Quad-core processor is integrated with a DDR2 DRAM memory controller capable of supporting registered and ECC DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance.

5 out of 5 eggsProcess Juggling

Pros: Cranks through multiple processes like a minature mainframe. Still scores 7+ in Windows 7 even though it's becoming a little dated. I run two VMware guests OSs plus play BF2 with no stuttering or slowdown. Even tried it one time with a DivX encoding running also and still no slowdown.

Cons: Not an AM3 so it will never get to play with DDR3 memory which would be neat to see. Does generate a bit of heat.

Other Thoughts: Mine is coupled with a Koolance EXOS2 so getting the heat out isn't a problem; I'd be a little careful running this (especially with a high-end graphics card) on air unless you have a really good case with excellent flow. Also, if your motherboard doesn't sport 8 phase VRMs or better, you'll need to cool those down somehow--they get brutally punished with core voltages spiking up and down and heat build-up.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Bang for the $$

Pros: Low cost, fast speed, overclockable.

Cons: Runs HOT! AMD still uses vertical standing pins for chip install.... easy to bend if you aren't paying attention.

Other Thoughts: Got this in a bundle deal with the Biostar motherboard, and 4 G of ram for $220.... hard to go wrong at that price!

But I would definately make sure you have a WELL vented case (at least 2 120mm case fans), and get a GOOD 120mm CPU cooler. I used a 120mm Zalman cooler and I idle at 28-30 °C and hit 32-36 °C under load. I would not run this chip with a stock cooler.

5 out of 5 eggsYou're crazy to pay for anything more

Pros: Used on a Gaming Rig I built August 2009, this processor is lightning fast.

Running SO COLD and SO FAST with a rosewill aftermarket air cooler. O/C'd to 3.1 STABLE AS HELL
you could honestly go to 3.5 on Air cooled and have a great "daily driver"

This thing dollar for dollar GHz for GHz is the fastest processor your money can buy.

Battlefield 2142 1080p res and Full settings? Hell yeah
Oblivion on full settings at 1080p? Not even a blink
this is on a 9500 GT card, and 4 gig of ram, can you imagine if i actually spent more than 100 bucks on a video card? the universe would spilt... no doubt.
Whatever you want it to do... it does, no questions asked.
i can't say enough good things about this CPU.

i upgraded from a dual core Turion X64.

Cons: I can't afford to buy the whole world one.

Other Thoughts: Dont think about it, AMD makes some great products, this chip is a budget rig masterpiece.

5 out of 5 eggsI love it

Pros: Fast and efficient.

Cons: Runs hot and included heatsink/fan is so so.

Other Thoughts: I've replaced the heatsink fan twice trying to cool it down under load. First an AC Freezer 64 Pro and now a ZALMAN CNPS 9500. The ZALMAN works better, about 2-3 degrees drop over the AC.

Part of my heat issue is with my case. Once I get the airflow out of it better I'm sure the temp on this sucker will drop.

1 out of 5 eggsTERRIBLE EXPERIENCE !!!

Pros: Wish there were some... This product should have been awesome, but Newegg ruined the experience.

Cons: Memory Channel #2 and #4 would not read RAM - possible bad memory controller. RMA'd it and Newegg refused to replace. First bad experience with Newegg - totally shocked that they refused to replace a defective product (Retail version too).

Other Thoughts: This has been the worse experience I have ever had with Newegg !!! After contacting customer service on two different occasions and being told that they would have a manager contact me with an explanation as to why they weren't replacing my part - STILL NO ONE HAS CONTACTED ME ! This is not the same service I had grown to know from Newegg, and needless to say I'm very dissappointed and will search for a better vendor next time.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Solid Processor

Pros: Bought this processor to replace a 6400+ x2. Using it on a m2n-sli deluxe mobo with Bios update 1604. Made a huge difference in movie conversions. Idles at 35c with a scythe ninja cooler. Overclocked to 2.8 it ran rock solid at 2 hours on prime 95 at 56-57c. Cheap respectable upgrade for an older mobo.

Cons: B.E. tops out at about 3.0. But, not too bad for a $120.00 quad core.

Other Thoughts: AMD 9950 BE
8 gig corsair xms ddr2 800
2 seagate 300 GB sata 3 hdd
asus M2n-sli deluxe
1 LG dvd-rw w/light scribe
1 Floppy lol

5 out of 5 eggsQuad Core Curious?

Pros: Quad core performance without breaking the bank

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: You're torn between Phenom price and Phenom II performance so here's some help.

For a Vista workstation, the 9950 will give you the best price/performance hands down. If you get adventurous, bumping the clock mildly up to 2.9GHZ will give you the same perceived performance as the Q6600 (I have both... I know) and with the SEVENTY BUCKS you save, bump your rig up to 8GB of RAM and laugh at your friends.

Seriously, this is one of the finest pieces of microprocessor technology ever. When it runs, it "feels" fast (you pros out there know what I mean).

5 out of 5 eggsSolid and fast

Pros: Great CPU for upgrading an older motherboard. My 3 year old Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe board took it without a hitch (though the board itself died a month later, irritatingly enough).

Cons: Not the best choice for a current motherboard. Definitely go with one of the new Phenom II chips if you're buying a new board too.

Other Thoughts: Four cores is probably overkill for most people, but it seems to be the wave of the future.
