3 out of 5 eggsSATA timeouts

Pros: My comments are all about e-SATA mode, I haven't tried USB. It is connected via an e-SATA bracket through to the Intel SATA ports in RAID mode on a Z77 chipset from Asus.

Data transfer rates are fine and it runs stably copying 4TB of weekly backups to a RAID-0 pair of HDDs.

Cons: Certain volume-management tasks cause timeouts for some reason. Formatting a disk, for example, hangs until Windows (server 2012 r2) logs:

"The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period."

On old 2011 Intel Rapid Storage Tech drivers, the format process completes after a timeout of a couple minutes. On newer 2013 and 2014 drivers, it never formats and often blue-screens.

This is true for HDDs and SSDs.

Plugging the same drives into the same e-SATA ports on the case directly, without this dock, runs without problems.

Other Thoughts: I mostly got this to plug big drives into to dump data on every week or so in rotation. It's fine for that. But when I want to add a new drive to the rotation, I have to format it using a different connection which is unfortunate. Why just formatting and some partitioning tasks? Maybe this doesn't pass some cache flush command correctly? I don't know.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Roger,

We are sorry to hear you are having issues with our dock, and we would be happy to work with you on this.

If you have not done so already, please check for any updates for the SATA controller, as this often helps alleviate compatibility issues. Also, are you able to test the dock with another eSATA connection, or test using USB? This will help us further isolate the cause of the problem.

If updates do not resolve the issue, please let us know the results of the testing, as well as the models of hard drives you are using with the dock. We’re always here to help with our lifetime technical support, so feel free to contact us and reference case number 303-216849 so we can assist you further.

Thank you,

5 out of 5 eggs4 years and still working

Pros: Still working 4+ years after purchase. I'm only using the USB port. I never tried the eSata port so I can't tell you how well it works.

It has been powering a 500GB and a 1TB drive for years. No complaints.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple & works well

Pros: Easy access to two 3.5" or 2.5" SATA disks without opening the case. Makes room for a 3.5" disk by folding down a flap with a 2.5" cutout in it - better than my old dock which had a piece that had to be removed.

Cons: None for me. Other reviewers complain about needing two eSATA cables, and I can see how that's inconvenient, but enough controllers don't support port multipliers that I like not having to worry about compatibility.

Other Thoughts: Didn't try the USB interface. Requires two eSATA ports on your computer.

2 out of 5 eggsgood till premature death

Pros: the esata part is cool but requires two controller connections

Cons: die way too soon [ 5 months of actual use stored past warranty ]

Other Thoughts: get the comparable rosewill unit, and get more for less

4 out of 5 eggsFast, Expandable, Connection options

Pros: Bought this two years ago to dock a 2TB seagate to my laptop for more storage (I do a lot of gaming and record the footage) this external dock operated as if the drive was in my computer

Cons: took one egg off because of two things
one
wish i could have docked two drives through one eSATA cable instead of two

two
one of the eSATA cables ?lock fingers? broke, could still use cable but it was loose and didnt facilitate a reliable connection

1 out of 5 eggsCheaply made

Pros: Fits two bare drives and has eSATA and USB ports

Cons: The power cord attaches very loosely to the unit. It very easily comes unattached unless it's kept very still. The power button to one of the slots became jammed and is now permanently on.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of Junk

Pros: Started out good with separate esata I/Os working well.

Cons: After a year the esata died. Switched to USB, which worked for a few months more then also died. StarTech is now on my "list" of companies that I will never buy anything from again.

Other Thoughts: Good luck with StarTech and their poor quality

5 out of 5 eggsEffective Storage Expansion

Pros: Dock is well-constructed
Simple to use
eSATA ports recognized at 3Gb/s in BIOS

Cons: None worth mentioning

Other Thoughts: I purchased two eSATA docks for my home PCs. One PC uses an extension cable from two internal SATA ports, converting to eSATA in a slot cover; the other PC uses a two-port eSATA PCIe card. I can drop drives into the dock and have them recognized in the OS with no issue. Performance is more than adequate, as I use the docks to duplicate drives with tools like Partition Magic and CloneZilla. I've recommended these to friends and coworkers and have been very satisfied.

5 out of 5 eggsLoving it!

Pros: This is the tops! I am saving so much time at work now that I have this! I used a toaster like this before and loved it so I order one for work and I have it hooked up with eSATA. I guess the USB port works on it I have not used it. USB is to slow for me. I work for a school district and when I have to do something I have to do it then and now. I love how it has 2 spots for hard drives and they both work perfect!

Cons: NONE!

Other Thoughts: Don't use USB and eSATA at the same time they will fight on who is going to do what and never stop so that means that your drive(s) will not show up.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: lol

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: How can these manufacturers offer warranties when they can't even manage to get working units to leave the factory?
