1 out of 5 eggsBEWARE!!!! complete system crash

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: NONE!!!
system locked in bios if any hard drives were attached to it
Removed hard drives from the card and it passed bios
then system rebooted in middle of loading windows (my file server has been flawless for months (24x7) after which i couldnt even get a restore point or safe mode to load. even repair from cd wouldnt fix the driver issue it caused. i had to reload file server.

Cons: It was cheap as long as you dont mind it totally bombing your system due to some incompatibility.

Motherboard asrock am1b-itx
samsung ssd drive

Other Thoughts: Might be an incompatibility with board but bottom line dont trust cheap cards with your data. And make a clone or try another blank drive before you bomb yours.

1 out of 5 eggsController Died

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: Was fast while it still worked.

Cons: The controller died after one year and a couple months of use. Unfortunately it did not fail in any obvious way, but just began to randomly corrupt the data on the drive attached to it.

4 out of 5 eggsExactly what it says on the tin

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: Nothing special to point out. It's exactly as advertised and does its job well.

Cons: Would have been nice if there had been an option for a black panel instead the silver one, but this is a non-issue.

Other Thoughts: I guess I'd recommend it.

1 out of 5 eggsjust plain bizarre

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: it fits in the socket

Cons: reversing cables caused one drive to disappear, problematic drivers

Other Thoughts: It worked fine in Linux but the Windows drivers are worthless. If I switched the cables when backing up from a 500GB to a 1TB drive, the 1TB drive would not appear. But if I booted into Linux it was fine. I went on a treasure hunt for drivers, and found three. One of them worked, but I wouldn't depend on this card for critical data. BTW I have 45 years experience in the computer business so I actually know what I am doing.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: NONE

Cons: I've had 5 drives go bad in the last couple of years, the only ones that go bad are connected to THIS card. I have tried several of these cards, they work for a few months to a year then one of the drives is toast connected to it. I simply cannot believe this is coincidence, when I have many other drives connected externally and internally that are all fine and going strong with no issue, EXCEPT THE ONES CONNECTED TO THESE CARDS ARE GETTING CORRUPTED SOMEHOW.

Other Thoughts: Do NOT waste money on this card, you will more than likely be replacing what you connect to it within a year. I have had multiple of this same card, and they are doing same thing. I'm phasing off the last one of these and going all internal with larger drives, these cards are a big letdown. You get what you pay for, these are CHEAP FLAWED cards and what makes it so bad is they seem to work fine for quite awhile then suddenly poof you lost one of the drives on them.
Further, if you format a drive on this card, IT CANNOT BE READ ON ANY OTHER CARD OR PLUGIN, IT CAN'T JUST BE REMOVED AND PLUGGED TO ANOTHER DEVICE, IT MUST ONLY BE MOVED TO THE SAME KIND OF CARD OR IT WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED. What a hullaballoo...I held off on this review a month or so ago when I lost a drive on one of these, and bought another card to try. Big mistake, didn't work, drive is still toast and now ANOTHER drive took a dump on the new card. Like I said, it is no coincidence, this is a cheap piece of junk and it is a WASTE OF TIME and MONEY to buy it.

3 out of 5 eggsSome improvements compared to SATA 2

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: Fast and smooth installation

Cons: My read and write speed for Samsung 840 EVO was 280 and 272 for SATA 2. Now it is 394 and 268. I am not sure if it is really improvement or not.

1 out of 5 eggsGigantic Disappointment

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: It installed fine.

Cons: My Samsung EVO 840 (a 6GB SATA III drive) is plugged in to a SATA II port. According to Samsung Magician, it was getting 281 MB/s for reads and 269 MB/s for writes. The Samsung software noted that it was only operating at a maximum of 3Gb/s on the SATA 2 port, and that performance could be increased by moving it to a SATA III controller. So I bought this card. After the install, I moved it to the SYBA controller and speeds DROPPED to 203 MB/s read and 177 MB/s write. All Samsung optimizations were applied, ACHI was enabled in BIOS, etc. The last thing I was expecting was a 30% drop in performance from my onboard SATA II controller. The drivers shipped with the card are the same as what are available on the manufacturer web site, and they're over 4 years old. No updates were available.

Other Thoughts: The motherboard I paired this card with is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128359). I thought I might be able to try a different card with a Marvell chipset, but there are a lot of reviews on another major web site by people who purchased SYBA (IO Crest) SATA III cards with that chipset and are also getting less than SATA II performance.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize for the issues you've experienced with this PCIe Card.

We have mentioned before to our customers that this is a common issue with the SY-PEX40039. Our advise is to uninstall the drivers and run on the generic Microsoft AHCI drivers that come after. You should notice a boost in sequential read/write speeds afterwards.

Please contact our support team if you need further assistance by emailing support@sybausa.com.

Our technical support team is available to help 9am-5pm M-F. Feel free to contact us during those business hours.

Thank you for purchasing one of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback.
