3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but no rebate

Pros: The unit worked out of the box. It is reasonably quiet. In my system is does hot swap.

Cons: You need to removed the casing to actually be able to swap the drives. Getting the middle drives out is still difficult. Could really use some sort of drive puller or ejector. It seems to be picky on which order the drives are populated.

Other Thoughts: I am very good about sending rebates in correctly. I had never missed a rebate that I sent in on time, even got a late one years ago. I bought this last black friday and sent the rebate in less than two weeks later. It is now late April and I have not seen it. Usually people cry about rebates and I do not worry much about it. I figure they are mad because they did not send it in time. I did send on time and included all needed information. Sounds like sans digital is running a scam. I honestly only bought it because of the price after rebate.

I hope there eventually is a class action suit about this.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor quality

Pros: - Cheap.
- Works as described until it inevitably breaks.

Cons: - Terrible build quality. My drives did not even sit level inside.
- I bought two and both failed within 6 months.
- Bright blue LED on fan, very tacky.
- Cheap power supply inside, will probably damage your drives.
- good luck getting your rebate from this company.

Other Thoughts: AVOID. If you need a cheap esata JBOD unit, get the mediasonic instead.

1 out of 5 eggsRuns for a while

Pros: When the power supply runs, it works as advertised.

Cons: As usual, a good product for a year. The power supply has failed after 1 year and 2 months. This coincides with their 1 year warranty. Another case of making a product just good enough to last through the warranty. Where has US integrity gone.

Other Thoughts: At least point us to a place to replace the power supply for reasonable dollars.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks with FreeNAS

Pros: Works with FreeNAS. (I was worried about this - not all SATA port expanders do, but this one is fine so far.)

Easily the least expensive 4-bay JBOD enclosure out there. Compact. Construction is fairly solid. Comes with thumbscrews and eSATA cable.

Also works fine with >2TB drives. (Yay!)

Cons: BRIGHT BLUE LED FAN IN REAR. (Seriously, guys?) Also, cover's a bit tough to get off, and the drives aren't hot-swappable.

Other Thoughts: When you turn it on, only the status light for HDD 1 lights up right away. The rest come on later in the boot process, just after you've wet yourself.

I'd buy another one, but it is spring, the garage is warm again, and the siren song of DIY is calling, so my next JBOD enclosure will probably be a converted toaster oven or something. :-)

5 out of 5 eggsPositive Review after a Year

Pros: I created a NAS by hooking this up to a cubox running ubuntu via esata, after installing ZFS I put in 4 WD 2TB drives and created 2 mirrored RAIDs; I shared out both ZFS volumes via SMB so I could stream to both my windows desktop and a raspberry pi XBMC media player. the only problems I have encountered were due to a loose esata cable
The power has been on for up to a week straight at times and I haven't encountered any of the psu issues other reviews have mentioned so maybe I got lucky
For the price, this is a solid product and i have almost a year of constant use. Bought a second one after running out of space.

Cons: Removing drives is not easy, unless I missed something in the instructions

5 out of 5 eggsGood unit - Don't count on rebate

Pros: Great Product... my 2nd of these units, First was bundle with eSata card... Second was unit alone. I use them on Windows Home Sever 2011 with Stablebit Drive Pool... its a good combo.

Cons: Never received the rebate I was supposed to get from Sans Digital

1 out of 5 eggsThe effort isn't worth the expense

Pros: Good paper weight when full of drives.

Cons: So far, I can't find a port multiplier card to work with it. I am on my third one.

Other Thoughts: I am no IT beginner, yet this thing is either rocket science or it flat doesn't work. I can't tell yet because I can't find any card that works with it. I am past my 30 days return already and I still have never used it. I'm almost ready to chalk it up as a complete loss and dump it in the trash. DEFINITELY not worth the hassle.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor online customer support.

Pros: Inexpensive way to add drives to a system which supports eSATA port multipliers. I've had these enclosures connected to systems using the HighPoint RocketRAID 2314, and have been pleased.

Cons: Slow customer support. I purchased one of these 8 months ago, and stored it on a shelf. When I tried to put it into production, it kept causing adapter timeouts, continuous re-scans, drives to drop from RAID, all four drives to be marked bad, loss of RAID. This happens with two sets of known good drives, which work in other Sans Digital enclosures.

I used the Sans Digital online "technical support inquiry" to begin a dialog about performing an RMA on the device. After 8 days with no response, I submitted the information online again. Still no response.

Other Thoughts: Look at the reviews - there are many people complaining about bad units. When you get a bad one, the company isn't always responsive. Besides that, paying shipping and returning items is a hassle. I've dealt with their tech support in the past and was pleased. I guess the only way to get a response is to call them or e-mail them. Their online inquiry requests a lot of information so it would seem like it would result in a quicker response/resolution.

Customer support under Newegg reviews is much more responsive than for their website.

If you get a good unit, you'll be pleased. (Just know you want to connect it to an eSATA port which supports port multiplication.) I have a 4-bay (Sans Digital) enclosure and 8-bay (Rosewill branded Sans Digital) enclosure which have been running fine for years.

Don't make the mistake I did of putting the unit on a shelf. Test it thoroughly when you get it.

1 out of 5 eggsDont follow through or live up to to agreements

Pros: Haven't used it...don't want to open it so I can return it if Since neither company wants to answer my questions of meet the obligations of the original sale. As an Affiliate of New Egg, $5 billion dollar electronics manufacture. Maybe I just need to call the buyer as proper channels and procedure is not working.

Cons: I will write a proper review when my issue is resolved....I hope the product is not a reflection of the companies day to day operations.

Other Thoughts: Things happen and I am OK with that....the real test of a company is how long and what they do after the sale to make it right with a customer that has rewarded the seller and the manufacture with your patronage.

Manufacturer Response:
