The TowerRAID TR8X is ab 8-bay tower with two mini-SAS connections, for high transfer rates of up to 750MB/s when used with a high performance RAID controller card. Utilizing high bandwidth mini-SAS (SFF-8088) cabling, the TR8X supports 3Gb/s SAS or SATA hard drives to deliver superior read / write speeds that are crucial in performance-driven environments such as video editing industry and server application. The mini-SAS ports combine eight hard drives connections into two, reducing possible points of failures, while preserving uninterrupted data transfer. The TR8X also supports SATA drives, allowing users the option to choose between high performance and high capacity storage solutions. Hard drive and RAID controller bundles options are available. When utilizing a SAS or SATA RAID controller, the unit could effortlessly support multi-streaming of compressed high-quality playback or a single-stream of uncompressed 10-bit high definition video under various RAID modes.

4 out of 5 eggsA bit pricey but does the job

Pros: I married this up with a HighPoint RocketRAID 4320 and a dual SFF-8087 internal to external SFF-8088 adapter from PC-Pitstop. Huge plus is SAN DIGITAL's inclusion of two Mini-SAS cables.
Expect for the drive trays (see below) the unit is well made and solid all-around.
The drives are kept cool by the sngle rear fan - according to Storage Health Inspector(SHI), all drives hover around 86F under load. Rear fan is not very loud

Cons: The drive bay trays fit nice adn snug but the SATA drive's data and power connectors are slightly mis-aligned to the unit's backplane when slid in. Once you figure out how they should look when fully seated, a little nudging them into place alleviates the problem.
The drive bay locks are plastic and a bit cheaply designed compared to the unit.
The LEDs on the front indicate individual drive access (as green) but do not differentiate between reads & writes – other units do this with green/red LEDs – I miss that.
The front door tends to fall open – not a biggee for me.
The two-state button power switch is a bit too exposed for me and coud be kicked when located on the floor

Other Thoughts: Running RAID 5 w/6 drives and 1 spare
NewEgg's pricing and delivery is (always) top-notch.
