1 out of 5 eggsOnly Works Reliably As Remote Power Switch

Pros: Easily installed
Inexpensive
Remote power control of your server

Cons: Buggy
KVM only works once in while (2-3x per year)
Incompetent Asus support

Other Thoughts: If you are trying to decide on a motherboard with OOB KVM, try something else. This product is known by Asus support to have issues with JRE 7 and 8 (I haven't tried it with the 1+ year old JRE 6, but they claim it works better). The web interface works to power/reset the server up and down, but the iKVM does not work. DO NOT BUY AN ASUS MOTHERBOARD IF YOU'RE COUTING ON THIS FOR OUT OF BAND MANAGEMENT!

1 out of 5 eggsBuggy, Unreliable, Waste of Time

Pros: Allows you to quickly check sensors for basic health information on the server.
Remote power up, power down, and hard reset are useful.
When it works, remote console is very useful

Cons: Buggy
Unreliable
Console works 1 in 1000 times
Server power works most times, but not always

Other Thoughts: This would be a great product, but it rarely works properly. I'm not sure why this is because a motherboard from another manufacturer with the same IPMI solution (AMI RAC) doesn't suffer from the same reliability problems.

2 out of 5 eggsjust ok / somewhat quirky

Pros: Shows sensor readings (volts, temps) and allows for remote power control (on / off / reset).

Cons: Will be removing this until something is updated. Seems to cause issues with ESXi 5.5. Using both the 1.05 and 1.08 firmware, and installed in a P9D-E/4L (with latest 0701 bios), one cpu core ramps up while system is idle (usually 15min after boot, no VM running). Also, the system will not shut down with this installed. It makes it through the shut down process, and at the final moment where power should be cut, the CPU ramps up, temps go up 25C+ and wall power up 10-15 watts.

Other Thoughts: It's fine for remote power on, and if you don't mind having Java installed on the PC, you can access this via the web for remote screen viewing. Also works fine to check volts, temps, and some logs (ecc). As another poster stated... its definitely no iDRAC or similar. The wasted CPU cycles, and inability to fully power off are deal breakers for me.

3 out of 5 eggsAdequate

Pros: It works, mostly. Recent firmware seems to have stabilized it. For the price, it performs as expected.

Cons: If you're accustomed to Dell DRACs, lower your expectations. This little guy is kludgy and fussy. You MUST update the firmware before you rely on it; the latest version seems a bit more stable, though it's still rather buggy.

Strictly a convenience item; I personally wouldn't rely on it to support a production server that's 500 miles away. If it becomes unresponsive, and it probably will sooner or later, you may have to power cycle your server to restore functionality, as there's no other way to cold-boot it.

Other Thoughts: For $50-70, it's adequate.

Based on its tiny size, I suspect this chip isn't much more than an activation key, with BMC functionality probably already built into the boards that it supports. Just a guess.

4 out of 5 eggsAmerican Megatrends Inc.

Pros: This device allows you to control your server in a window on any computer. I was able to update my motherboard BIOS without having to attach a keyboard or monitor. The power control lets you power the computer on or off, or reset it if its hung. It lets you see BIOS boot screen messages and access the BIOS within a window on any client computer. ASUS doesn't tell you, but it's actually the AMI Megarac product.

Cons: Requires Java plug-in on client browser
