5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

Pros: Decent price. Runs ESX well out of the box.

Cons: This thing is loud. You might think about replacing the stock fans.

Other Thoughts: This does support 8-core CPU, despite what the other reviewer stated. I don't know why they couldn't get it to work, but I have two 8-core Xeon running in it just fine.

3 out of 5 eggsNot happy with LSI 9280-16i4e

Pros: It's solid built materials -- heavy gauge steel. If you are trying to hookup a RAID controller -- remove the fans just in front of the drive bays to allow you to remove the pre-installed SATA cables.

Cons: LSI controller does not work to start with. Passmark shows drive verify errors 1 in every 16 billion. Same controller in my Intel server seems rock solid.

BIOS update is clunky compared to other vendors (ASUS/Intel). It is currently bricked due to attempt to upgrade. Do not try the Super.ROM method to upgrade -- look at using IPMI and a floppy image.

Be careful with the CDROM drive bay -- you don't need to take that out, just push the light blue levers.

5 out of 5 eggs12 Cores No Waiting!!!!!

Pros: 8 drive bays, dual processor support, up to 512GB of memory. Dual power supplies and it is quiet considering the processing power it packs.

Cons: So brand new it was buggy during setup. Once we got all the bios settings and Windows patches squared away it runs great. Problem with USB keyboard and mouse not tracking properly. Contacted Supermicro support and will follow up to get updated Bios. Minor issue and I am confident they will take care of it.

Other Thoughts: Xeon e5-2620 (12 cores w/HT)
32 GB Samsung ECC Memory
Adaptec 6805 Raid (setup as raid 10)
4 x Seagate Constellation ES.2 ST33000650NS
Checked Supermicro website to make sure everything was compatible. Came up on the first boot no problem. Make sure you load SP1 for 2008 R2 or you will have problems with virtualization on this box.

1 out of 5 eggswow dual socket 2011

Pros: turns on

Cons: Dosent support six or eight core cpu's, who is going to buy a dual 2011 board and not run 6 or 8 cores per cpu????? Latest firmware dosent help either. Time to switch back to tyan boards.

Other Thoughts: Bought 2 of these doorstops, I should of read more into the board, forgive me for assuming that all dual socket 2011 boards were capable of better than quad core......
