5 out of 5 eggsCompletely satisfied

Pros: Easy to setup, very reliable, included everything you'd expect from a barebone server, lightning fast with a Xeon E5-2609.

Cons: Very deep... if you have an older rack, it may need to stick out the back (meaning you can't close the back).

Other Thoughts: I bought this barebone server here at NewEgg about three years ago to setup a home file server. I had build my own servers from components before, but this time I wanted to go the barebone route with an optimized case, cooling etc. It was definitely worth it.

I put a separate Adaptec SATA RAID card, and 7 WD Caviar Black 500 GB drives into it, configured as a RAID5 (one hot-spare). That gives me around 3 Terrabytes of storage space.

I am running FreeBSD on it, with Samba which is how every computer in the house accesses it. Apart from the usual ntpd, sshd stuff, there is really nothing on there. Clean and simple, runs non-stop and never had a problem, even though it gets pretty hot in that little server room of mine.

I have been using SuperMicro since the late 90s, and only had one board failing (out of 12 or so), which was bought used (not a good idea). I stick with these guys, their MB boards, and obviously this barebone server, are top notch, at least for my needs.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsHigh quality

Pros: Metal work well machined, everything fits smoothly. Motherboard fully compatible with FreeBSD 10.

Cons: Not really a con, but the chassis comes with a CPU heatsink. Don't buy one by mistake because Newegg won't pay for the return shipping on the surplus heatsink.

Other Thoughts: If you're going to run a ZFS RAID-Z2 filesystem, you're going to need 6 drives to make it worthwhile. Throw in a hot spare and you'll need a minimum of 7 drive bays. This chassis has 8 bays, so it is the minimum I'd get.

The motherboard's SATA interfaces are a mixed bag. If you are going to use ZFS, you're better off getting an LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card, reflash to disable on-board RAID. If so, you need to buy the multilane internal breakout cables and replace the cables that are used in the chassis.
