The Republic of Gamers consists only the best of the best: the best hardware engineering, the fastest performance, the most innovating ideas, and we welcome the best gamers to join in. In the Republic of Gamers, mercy rules are only for the weak, and bragging rights means everything. The ROG MATRIX GTX 580 continues the success of ASUS’ ROG MATRIX Series graphics cards. It comes preloaded with a variety of hardware-based tools, including TweakIt and ProbeIt for instant overclocking adjustment and measurement, plus a Safe Mode button for the instant restoration of stable settings at any time.

With a ground-up PCB redesign and exclusive 19-phase Super Alloy Power technology, the ROG MATRIX GTX 580 has been created to deliver the ultimate in overclocking performance, with a 15% performance boost, 2.5 times longer lifespan and 35°C cooler operation than the reference card design. The new GPU Tweak overclocking tool has integrated the GPU-Z to provide accurate information about the graphics card, while ASUS engineers have developed real-time clock frequency, voltage, fan speed and profile adjustments for up to four different card settings in combination to this.

Also helping cool the MATRIX GTX 580 is an exclusive DirectCU II thermal design that puts copper heatpipes in direct contact with the GPU to effectively dissipate heat. Twin sound-dampened fans also pull 600% more air across the card’s heatsinks than the reference design, achieving 20% cooler operating temperatures. The multicolored MATRIX LED load indicator provides an at-a-glance, color changing display of the card’s overall load in real-time, too.

  • newegg TweakIt – Instant Voltage Adjustment! TweakIt provides users with flexible overclocking control even when running benchmark programs! The “+” and “-” button puts overvolting adjustments in the user´s fingertips, offering them performance optimization options during game play to gain the competitive edge.
  • newegg ProbeIt – Instant Voltage Measurement! ProbeIt takes the guesswork out of locating the graphics card´s measurement points, identifying them clearly in the form of 6 sets of detection points so you´ll know exactly where to get quick yet accurate readings using a multimeter.
  • newegg Safe Mode – Instant Settings Reset! Safe Mode button resets the graphics card back to default frequencies and BIOS. This is a very welcomed feature for hardware enthusiasts, think of it like the "Clear CMOS" on a motherboard.
  • newegg GPU Tweak – Professional Graphics Overclocking Tools for Enthusiasts! The latest ASUS overclocking utility offers: adjustment core and memory clocks, core voltage and fan speed on up to four cards setting; getting live updates on drivers and BIOS to keep your graphics card protected; viewing accurate card information with the most authoritative graphics card information tool GPU-Z; and saving your optimized settings into graphics card BIOS.
  • newegg 19-phase Super Alloy Power – Efficient power delivery! Built with exclusive 19-phase Super Alloy Power technology, the MATRIX GTX 580 guarantees much greater overclocking headroom, with a 15% performance boost, 2.5 times longer lifespan and 35°C cooler operation than the reference card design.
  • newegg DirectCU II – 600% Greater Air Flow, 20% Cooler Operation Than Reference! Cooling is well taken care of by exclusive DirectCU II technology that puts copper heatpipes in direct contact with the GPU. The pipes efficiently transfer heat through two massive fans that deliver 600% more airflow than the reference design, resulting in a 20% lower operating temperatures.

1 out of 5 eggsCooling fan when out

Pros: Good card. preforms well.

Cons: Nvidia has had in the past 2 bad drivers they were released that caused the graphics card to preform badly. Cooling fan when out after a year, ASUS would not send out a replacement fan, I had to send in the card to them. FedEx lost the graphics when it was suppose to be sent back to me. FedEx issued a full price claim to AUS to reimburse the card and to get me sent out a new one. It has now been over 2 months and ASUS has still not replaced my graphics card.

Other Thoughts: ASUS will not send out a new card even tho FedEx is paying for a new one. Also ASUS does not return my called when I try to follow up on this nor do they respond to my emails. This has been by far the worst customer experience ever.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Spider,

I am sorry to hear about your fan failure and the problems you are having with shipping. Please provide me any information that you can about your RMA, or your FedEx/ASUS Support contacts so that I may look into it for you. If there is anything else I can do for you, please let me know and I will be happy to assist you to the best of my abilities. You can reach me at and I apologize for the inconvenience that this has been for you.

2 out of 5 eggsBad Luck

Pros: Card is fast and the controllability of the card is great

Cons: The card starting going bad after about 33days. I starting getting video driver recovery failures (Without even over-clocking) Asus response with regards to RMA was horrible at first... They didn't even respond to me within 94 never mind the promised 48 hours. When I finally get through the first level of support I am told my card needed to be RMA'd. They have an advance replacement policy just have to provide cfredit card (No problem) I just cannot be without my system for 15 days.... They contact me 3 days later and say sorry charlie we have no cards in stock.. You must send in your card... Well I cant be without my system for 3 weeks. SO They escalate again. 2 days later a VERY nice rma guy gets back to me with more bad news.. There are no more of these cards currently the country. So I have two choices... He can keep querying with hopes one will show up some time in the near future or send in my card... Which I cannot do... I cannot even find another like card to buy...

Other Thoughts: I cannot even have any hopes of SLIing this card because they no longer around...

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing!

Pros: Crysis 2, SWTOR, and Skyrim on Ultra setgings with no lag. Fits in my Antec midsize tower. Best card I've ever owned

Cons: A bit big? I would hardly consider it a con for me.

Other Thoughts: I think I got the last one, because it sold out as soon as I bought it. Sorry!

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent overclocking

Pros: Excellent overclocking
Easy software and driver installation
Great monitoring tools
Flawless design

Cons: Very large
Fits into only the full tower cases

Other Thoughts: I got this card back in September after doing extensive research on it. At this moment it runs at an OC of 926MHZ flawless, the highest I gotten it was 1200MHz.

It is near whisper quiet and it's led logo is beautiful and eye catching at LANs.

The only problem with this card is that it is quite large and does require a full tower case. I had to cut some out two HDD bays to fit this card into my Cooler Master Scout.

Needles to say it is the best crd on the market thus far, and is well worth the money.

4 out of 5 eggsThe price to pay for the preformance.

Pros: Fastest single gpu on the market today. It beats everything in it's class, by that i mean single gpu cards. The only way anyone has a more powerful setup is if they have an sli setup or a gtx590 or hd6990. This will be true until a few weeks or months from now when the hd7xxx/gtx6xx series comes out (there is a small possibility that next gen cards will be plagued with bugs fingers crossed!). Runs quiet if you know what you're doing and you have good airflow. The physical qualities of this card are all perfect, it looks great, the light up matrix logo is very classy and anyone who knows anything who looks into your case will freak out when they see this triple wide 11.5in monster.

Cons: It's huge, pictures don't do it justice. Needs alot of air flow and not just a good case. I have a silverstone rvo1 (raven 1) and had to remove my sound card to let the fans breathe. It has the potential of running way too hot if you don't utilize all the tools given i.e. gpu tweak, 2d mode, fan speed. Takes two 8 pin connectors.

Other Thoughts: There are cards with faster stock speeds but this card overclocks the best with stock cooler.
Most Motherboards that came out more than a year ago probably can not run this card in sli just because of the way the pci ports were spaced, however several motherboard manufactures Asus especially has began making their motherboards with pci slots 3 slots apart with their own triple wide cards in mind.
The card can be insanely loud with the fans at 100%, however the only time you should ever hear that is when benchmarking so I won't list it as a con. Usually with my custom fan profile the fans go between 20%-50% and the temps stay within 30-55
I only gave the card 4 eggs because as you see there are alot of cons to owning this card. On the plus side none of these cons are design or build quality related, they are all linked to how powerful this card is. And price is never a con, not because I'm loaded or something but because its our choice as consumers to buy a product or not.

5 out of 5 eggsBeast

Pros: Incredible performance, chews up and spits out everything I have thrown at it. Max settings in BF3, SWTOR, etc, flawless frame rates. No overheating or any other problem yet.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I know new cards are on the horizon but I just built my first computer and I wanted the best there was. In my opinion which was supported by extensive research this was it.

5 out of 5 eggsLove This Card

Pros: Stable
Change the memory timings.
Lots of over clocking.
Awesome design.
Cool glowing MATRIX logo on the side
Some direct button controls located directly on the card.

Easy to keep dust free!!

So much more!

Cons: Takes up 3 PCI slots. Epic loudness when fans are at 100%. My voltage wont change when using the on board voltage buttons despite the LEDs changing (I use the included software GPU Tweak to change the voltages). Neither points deduct any eggs for me.

Other Thoughts: I love this card. Its beautiful! Only a hand full of crashes before I found a stable overclock. I run my card speeds at 960mhz gpu and 4304 mem 100% of the time. I also run my fans at 100% all of the time (I also often use the fan button). Plays all my games at max settings, aa + af at 1920x1200 flawlessly. Skyrim? Eats it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! It's a BEAST!

29c idle

60-70c full load with some games.

Taxes come, Im buying a 2nd one. Asus, please dont discontinue these until after tax season!!

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Asus did get back in touch with me for an RMA number.

This is a great card!

Cons: Follow up to my earlier review. The card ran super hot most of the time - idling at 56c - without overclocking. In BF3 the card would overheat every-time getting up to 100c an BSD.

I contacted Asus and they are RMA it for me...Cool. Sending it back tomorrow.
From start to getting the RMA is about a week to get the number but I can understand so no worries.

As for the guy that says a "you need to have good cooling in your case....duhh!", I have a Corsair Obsidian Series 800D with three fans along the top it is freezing when the card does not heat it up.
The card sits on a ASUS MAXIMUS IV EXTREME (REV 3.0).

A defective card is a defective card no matter what your case may be...duh

But Asus seems to be supportive of the defect so I'm good.

As long as the RMA returns in a reasonable time. :)

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost perfect

Pros: -OC friendly
-HDMI & Display port
-100% fan button allows for some ridiculous overlocks (1000+mhz)

Cons: -Display Port errors with Samsung SA750. To clarify, when using Display Port, I cannot see the BIOS screen, and on occasion the monitor will not wake when booting the computer. As a result, I have to physically unplug the power to the monitor and plug it back in to wake it up.

Other Thoughts: With the latest Nvidia drivers, and clocked to 950mhz, the 580GTX Platinum can run Battlefield 3 on ultra settings with little trouble.

However a few nagging issues with Display Port (which imo, is a Nvidia driver issue) keeps it from being a flawless product for me.
