Sapphire brings the power of graphics ‘supercomputing’ to enthusiasts with their Vapor-X Radeon HD 4890 card. Built on Sapphire's original Vapor Chamber Technology, this card will bring the benefits of Vapor-X cooling - quieter and more efficient cooling - to a wider range of users.
The Sapphire Vapor-X Radeon HD 4890 card has 1GB of high-performance GDDR5 memory, clocked at 850MHz and the GPU core is clocked at 950MHz. Supporting AMD CrossFireX technology, two high-speed connectors on each card allow two or more cards to be used together for enhanced performance when installed in a CrossFireX compatible motherboard.
The Radeon HD 4890 incorporates the latest ATI Avivo HD Technology for enhanced video display, and features a second generation built-in UVD 2 (Unified Video decoder 2) for the hardware accelerated decoding of Blu-ray and HD DVD content for VC-1, H.264 and MPEG-2 codecs, considerably CPU load. Clutch2
- Pros: replaced with RMA, now its working at least. Powerful card, definately beats my 4870 512mb. Got over 18,300 in 3D06 with a PII 3.6ghz, Asus M4A79T Deluxe, 4GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600, this 4890, and a WD 300GB VR.
- Cons: I'm getting a lot of VPU recovery problems.. happens almost twice a night.. and temps don't go above 68*C from what I can see. Fan speeds at 66-70% gets a bit loud but cooling is adequate, but not as great as I expected it to be. Used Catalyst 9.5, 9.6 and 9.8 all with similar results. 9.6 being the most stable, but I still get errors while gaming that cause it to go to VPU recovery.
I honestly believe the stock HSF on the 4890s does a better job cooling.. My case temps have NEVER been so high.. no air gets exhausted out the back. It actually disperses it into the case and its heating up my CPU a few degrees. Not very happy about that.
- Other Thoughts: Trying to contact Newegg to see if they will let me return it for another 4890, probably with the stock HSF as it does a great job of exhausting heat.. the only side effect is its just a bit noisier.. but I could keep that at 55% fan speed and never go above 58*C on my 4870.
2 eggs, cause this is my second one and I'm still not happy, the card works.. but it's not that stable.
Decent
- Pros: Good Card, High Frame Rates 16,650 3dmark06 with a phenom II 550 X2 oc'ed to 3.9 stable. "if i had 955 with same OC levels, I would easily reach well over 20,000; seeing my cpu score only was 3097."
- Cons: Poor Overclock-ability only reached 910 on core and 1050 on memory. and yes the card was cool 24/7 never went above 55 C.
- Other Thoughts: Price is a bit high still wait a few months till ati's new line comes out, and prices will drop decently.

Good Card For 5 months
- Pros: Strong Card for a reasonable price. Drivers are available and it does a very good job displaying games on the highest settings on my 24" monitor with my current build. I am not going to post what it is because it doesn't matter. I've never had an ATI card before and was impressed at the power for the low price of the card. Will definately consider buying more in the future.
- Cons: Died on me after only 5 months of ownership. I have an office where i play all my games and keep it at a nice cool 70 degrees all the time. The temperature of the card never rose above 70 degrees celsius while stress testing the system. Full load. Yet it still managed to overheat and artifact on me. My screen turned bright red and i couldn't do anything.
- Other Thoughts: Sending it back to Sapphire to get it replaced. Sadly i have to pay shipping, but they have a great warranty and remind me of the ATI version of EVGA. Will try this brand again and hope it works out. I loved the card when it worked.
Excellent Card
- Pros: -Fantastically powerful
-Stable (in Windows)
-Temperature is not an issue (at least in my case)
-Great Price for this level of performance
- Cons: -Gargantuan Form Factor - Barely fit in my Antec 300 case
-ATI Linux Drivers still need work, but development is moving along at an acceptable pace.
- Other Thoughts: I bought this for a machine I was building for my Wife. This is the first ATI card I have ever purchased because for the longest time they offered no Linux support and even went out of their way to hinder the Linux community from creating a usable set of drivers.
ATI has since come around to open source and Linux and in a big way so I thought I would give them a try. I am very pleased with this purchase.
Plays every game I own at max specs without a hiccup (bear in mind the "heaviest" game I have is "Aion: Tower of Eternity")
A Screamer
- Pros: - Amazing framerates. Can play all UT3-engine games on max settings.
- Crysis on Max Settings
- Name me a game. Max settings.
- Cons: It's big.
- Other Thoughts: This baby is a work horse like I've never seen. I'm extremely happy with this video card. As long as the game supports it, you can do it. I don't use the Catalyst Control Panel to force anything, so I never have any problems.
Amazing. I can see why ATI is winning the war this round.
