4 out of 5 eggsGood board.

Pros: I have owned this board for a few years, the WORST ASRock product I've bought...

...and it still earns 4 eggs because of how great its been. Its been quirky at times, but has been reliable and flexible to my needs.

Will buy ASRock again, spending more next time though.

Cons: Weird driver issues. One RAM slot works when it feel like it. Only knocked off one egg, I don't need more than 2 slots. The box was slightly damaged when it arrived, maybe that had something to do with it.

Other Thoughts: Good heat management and lots of fan headers in the right places.

3 out of 5 eggsBad USB ports

Pros: Went 2 years without a problem. At the time I got it, it was a great price for all the specs it came with.

Cons: After owning the MB for about 2 years, all of the USB ports (2.0 and 3.0) started to go out as others have mentioned. It seems to happen more often with some devices than others, especially my Logitech G5 mouse. Every so often the mouse and/or keyboard would cut out for 5-10 seconds. Sometimes the USB would stop altogether until I rebooted the computer. Replugging USB into the same or different ports would only sometimes fix the problem for a few minutes.

I have tried a different G5 mouse and I get the same problem. These devices do not have any problem on other computers so I know it is a problem with this motherboard. I have tried a fresh install of Windows and reinstalled the drivers from the CD, as well as the latest available drivers for this MB from the ASRock website.

This seems to be a common problem with ASRock motherboards based on various reviews I have seen for other ASRock. ASRock's recommendations to fix this problem is a joke. They state to unplug the USB device and plug it back in, or to check to make sure the USB connectors aren't loose. I'm sure people have already tried these basic steps. In my case, it is a problem with all of the USB ports. The behavior of this problem leads me to believe it is a firmware related issue.

Other Thoughts: I ended up buying a USB 3.0 PCI-E adapter to overcome this problem. It cost me $13 for one with 2 ports. Specifically, I went with this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815166026. 3.0 barely costs more than 2.0, so I just went with the 3.0. You can get a 4 port USB 3.0 adapter for about $25. It sucks I had to go this route, but it's cheaper than buying a new motherboard.

If it wasn't for the USB issue I would have a great review, but the USB problem is a pretty big deal with how annoying it is. And it really surprises me on how many responses I saw from ASRock telling them to reconnect the USB. I'm sure they know the real reason for the problem, and they just don't want to own up to it.

I think I'm going to stick with GIGABYTE whenever possible. I've had nothing but great experiences with their motherboards.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Reliable after more then a year

Pros: I've had this motherboard for a little more then a year now, I'll give it to Asrock they made a nice motherboard for the price. This motherboard was fast, worked well with my parts and did the jobs I tasked it with.

Cons: All was smooth until a little after a year or so of having it I started getting BSOD(blue screens of death). At first I thought it there was a problem with my memeory, SSD or my RAM. After replacing both parts I came to realize it was a faulty motherboard. As a computer techy for the past 8 years, I can honestly say that this product did not last as long as I had hoped.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't recommend buying this because it doesn't last long. Normally you could expect a motherboard to last from 2-5 years, but this MB died before even hitting its 2 year mark

5 out of 5 eggsCorrecting Past Review

Pros: I had previously thought that the motherboard was the issue and the second graphics card slot was the reason for failure when trying to dual SLI my two video cards.

I recently tried testing the second card out again just for fun since it was still in the packaging and I figured why not use a 'new' card as opposed to the one that's been in my computer for years.

The same problem occurred that was happening to me 2 years ago.

This motherboard has done me wonders for the past (almost) 3 years. No problems and fits perfectly into a Cooler Master HAF 932 with ease.

Cons: Out of Stock!

Other Thoughts: This was my first computer build, and ASRock has not disappointed. My previous review was in haste apparently and I wish I had tested both pieces of my computer puzzle out further before writing it.

4 out of 5 eggsIt had a good run

Pros: Worked well for over 2 1/2 years so i would say it had a good run.

Cons: After about 2 1/2 years the on-board audio started glitching. Started getting video driver errors. Did a fresh windows install and then got black screen after video card drivers downloaded. RMAed the video card and got the same issue with the new one. Tried onboard video and would no longer run 2 monitors like it would before i got the video card. So it seems to have come down the the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: knocking off an egg not because the board crapped out. I really hate how the other pci slot is on the bottom up against the wiring. Cannot install graphics card there to test and see if the original issue is the pci slot.

A good board overall, very little to complain about while it worked.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked good

Pros: Over clocked 2500k well while it lived.

Cons: First ram slot too close to after market cooler.

See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: Recently the analog audio went out and the digital audio started to cut in and out on Windows, on Linux the digital worked but the analog also broke. After a cross comparison with other distros I confirmed that the onboard audio had infact died. I looked online and found that there were not really many choices for fully functioning sound cards on Linux that sported a S/PDIF out that I so dearly needed. I decided to attempt to update the firmware when I ran into problem number two.

It died.
The firmware upgrade utility in the bios said successful, but when it rebooted it entered a bootloop with the Dr. Debug error code of 55 for a ram issue, which there wasn't as I tested 4 different sticks one at a time and they had all ran in memtest86.

So now I sit here with a dead board wondering if its worth it to get Asrock to send me a new bios for $15 as its out of warranty, and even then my audio is still dead.

I'm choosing to buy a different board, RIP.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked until the warranty ran out

Pros: Cheap and ran like a champ until it didn't.

Cons: Poor RAM layout (too close to socket for larger cooling setups), on-board audio failed shortly after the warranty ran out. You get what you pay for I guess... gonna write them a letter and see how reasonable the are on the support side. I've had MOBO's and other components last for 3x this long with no issues.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the audio, please check the HD Audio onboard is enable in BIOS, Advanced, South Bridge Configuration.
Plug the analog speaker to rear speaker port (green), set the default playback sound to analog speaker at Control Panel/Sound/Playback.
Check the Windows volume control has not been muted.
Test with another known good speaker.
Download and install the audio driver at link below.

3 out of 5 eggsASRock Z68 Extreme3

Pros: This has been the motherboard for my gaming PC for about 2 years now and besides the rough beginnings it has worked fine.

Cons: When I bought it the advertised bios firmware was not the actual bios firmware and so the board did not work with my CPU (even though it was specifically advertised to do so). They said they could ship a bios with the correct firmware in 2 weeks. 2 weeks is not even close to ok.

Other Thoughts: I called support and they confirmed that the firmware update for the bios was not going to be on their boards for a few weeks. They said they could mail me a replacement bios chip but that would take up to 2 weeks. I already waited for shipping so this was unacceptable. I asked that they use a faster shipping method and they refused. They should have shipped to me ASAP. It is very embarrassing that the best they could do to deliver firmware that was advertised to already be installed was 2 weeks..... So I borrowed a friends CPU that was compatible with the old firmware, flashed the bios with the new firmware that I downloaded online myself, and then everything worked when I re-installed my own CPU. If I can get that done in a day, ASUS should do better than two weeks when I already paid them.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesomeness

Pros: Lots of features. Low Price. Good Quality!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This is my first product from ASRock and I am very happy with it. Had this board for 2.5 years and it still works great. I don't see how some people get 2 or 3 dead items in a row. They could just have bad luck, but more than likely they are doing something wrong. Sometimes you may get a defective part once in a blue moon but if you order the same item from a respectable company and it ends up being "DOA" more than once, you probably don't know what you are doing and should have a professional install your components. ;)
