2 out of 5 eggsDefective Memory Slots

Pros: 32 memory slots
4 CPU slots
Available Phone Tech Support

Cons: 8 defective memory slots
only one SATA port on the motherboard

Other Thoughts: This would have been a great board, if all 32 memory slots worked. Unfortunately, only 24 memory slots worked on my board, mirroring many reviews here. I called their tech support, and they agreed that the problem was defective memory slots.

To make matters worse, evidently I bought the last one from Newegg (it is now Out of Stock), so I couldn't get a replacement. I couldn't return it either really, because I had already opened my AMD CPUs so they couldn't be returned, and I didn't have any use for 4 AMD CPUs without this particular motherboard (usually I would buy Intel CPUs -- I made an exception for this particular motherboard).

Having said all my gripes about this board, it is still running great with just 3/4 CPUs and 24/32 memory slots. I've got it with 192 GB memory. Probably not the most cost effective way to get 192 GB -- it would have been a real great deal if I could have gotten 256 GB like I originally planned (all the parts totaled about $4000, if only the motherboard wasn't defective!).

Please, don't waste your time on this board. It is too good to be true. The 32 slots seems to usually not all work. Hopefully the motherboard stays out of stock so nobody else gets stuck with another one of these defective boards.

1 out of 5 eggsDefected Motherboard

Pros: It was the only motherboard able to mount 4xOpteron available on Newegg, price looked good.

Cons: As soon as I installed the second processor, the card started blinking red. No documentation on manual or the internet describing the led ID or what could go on, after a long call with a bored technician, we resolved that the card is defected.

Other Thoughts: After reading many reports of faulty S8812 on the Internet, I decided to order it anyway thinking it wouldn't happen to me... but yeah, it did.

3 out of 5 eggsfor fast UDIMMs use only four per proc

Pros: Spec
DDR3-1600 1.5V UDIMM
Lights-out-management is wonderful.
LSI2008 built in. (needs cables)

Cons: Reality.
Now I have to replace my RAM to get BOTH the speed and capacity I need. Have 2GB sticks in every slot, this is WRONG. (thought they were single rank. found out after 30 days).

I need 4GB sticks in only half the slots. DDR3-1600 1.5V UDIMM

Other Thoughts: Follow up: Even tiny 2GB UDIMMs are dual rank (at least from G.Skill). if you want to go DDR3-1600 you must fill only HALF of the RAM sockets!

(otherwise you get DDR3-1333)

4 out of 5 eggsThank you Tyan customer service

Pros: 64 processors all in a row
Tyan customer service from Fremont, CA was awesome, thanks guys!!!
Real, smart, people helped online and on phone
Lights-out
Tyan gave one-day turn around to reprogram my BIOS chip.t management is GREAT. (server H/W is new to me)

Tyan gave one-day turn around to reprogram my BIOS chip.

Cons: WRONG BIOS on my new board (lose a star, or twenty)
Bulldozers CANNOT run without recent BIOS. MUST chip-swap, cannot update BIOS if cannot POST

tiny socket with wire bail holding in the eeprom. read the sticker before pulling out hair.

Tyan gave one-day turn around to reprogram my BIOS chip.

They were great on the phone and online.
have yet to figure out how to get memory configured for fast/tight timings. BIOS thinks RAM is DDR2 not three, and won't go beyond 1333 even though faster speeds are supposedly possible.listed speed.

Other Thoughts: Fifty hours in, the build started to go well. Not one hole was useful on my Lian Li P80. Not on the tray, not on the I/O panel. Fabricated my own MB tray out of plywood, and sheet-metal. less than an inch to spare vertically. First day able to verify that all 64 CPU's are in use.
My most aggressive build yet, of ~50. I assume I will need to wait for a new BIOS to properly run my RAM.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Bought this to build a protein folding workhorse. Dropped 4 6174 procs in along w/ 16x1GB sticks of 1333 RAM. Only went w/ bare minimum memory to utilize the 4 channel bonus, and protein folding doesn't use much anyway. This is my first server so can't say much more than the fact it works and hasn't crashed a single time yet. Folding 24/7, all 48 cores tached to 100% so it's a very stable board.

Cons: None myself, however my friend bought this board the same time I did and his was DOA. Newegg looked at it, then sent it back blaiming him. They said he bent pins in one of the sockets. He's built servers for many years and writes server software for a living, so I don't believe thier account whatsoever. I wouldn't have purchased this board from them if we hadn't ordered them at the same time.

Other Thoughts: F@H PPD:
p6901: 290-300,000PPD
p6903: 465-475,000PPD
p6904: 500-515,000PPD

5 out of 5 eggsDecent but could be better for the cost

Pros: This makes a great place to start when getting into higher scaled needs, good performance, reasonable capacity

Cons: I ran into the memory issues that others pointed out here

1 out of 5 eggsAll S8812 boards are faulty

Pros: It works very well with partial memory loads. Opteron 6168s showed excellent scaling.

Cons: The board would not take a load of 128GB, 16 x 8GB rams. The last two memory sockets fail..

Other Thoughts: I just got off the phone with Tyan. After making me jump through all sorts of hoops for two weeks they finally admitted that all of the S8812s had this problem as of October 19, 2011. Tyans quality control is extremely poor if they let out a board with such an obvious problem. And on top of that they want me to pay for shipping the board back even though they shipped a whole line of board with a fault. The board may eventually be worth getting. However I find it very annoying that Tyan is using their customers to the QC for them. This is inexcusable. I would have given it zero eggs but the rating field will not except that.

4 out of 5 eggsabout time

Pros: great board.. fits in meb format

drop this in a tx46 or retrofit a vx50..

the 8-way istanbul is officially DEAD

no more bandwidth problems

faster than the Westmere in bandwidth and Matrices
solvers

Cons: none found to date.. just very late in release
this was to be out in may

Other Thoughts: Hope it functions as well or better than the Supermicro boards.. yet less memory capacity. 256GB limit

Supermicro board can take 512GB.. yet who needs that??
