5 out of 5 eggsBEST HASWELL BOARD, But A REFURB?

Pros: I have purchased a number of these boards and everyone a winner. One of the best features of the Z87-WS is that it supports a PCIe 3.0 X8 slot that doesn't steal from the graphic card in the PCIe 3.0 X 16 . Allows me to install Areca Rev 3.0 12gb/sec Raid Cards.

Cons: I bought this board and made the mistake of letting it get past the 30 day return. I started it up and updated the BIOS and all was fine. I added Windows Pro 7 and all is fine. I then put in the GTX 760 and all is not fine.

It would not post to save my life. My basement looks like a Newegg shipping site. I tried new everything. I put every component into another build. In the end the only item that did not work was the motherboard.

I just purchased 2 new Z97-WS boards and 1 Deluxe which I used here to test all of the components associated with "the Z" that is kill'n me!

The thought of RMA'ing a brand new motherboard in Mint- 1hour of use motherboard is what really upsets me. If a product fails after an hour of use, why am I going to be Looking at a REFURB? If it was a board as well cared for as mine- that would be one thing, but now I am no longer excited about a "New" build. It will never be a new build. Asus, why don't you "Buy Back" so I can "Buy New Again"?

Other Thoughts: I would love to overhaul the entire Asus RMA method. I was especially disturbed when I purchased X79 WS boards that would not provide PCId 3.0 X 16. (Not until Intel came out with the 4930K series).

And on the Z87-WS I bought the first ones out and I tried to get a replacement with the C2 Stepping and all I could get was a refurb if I sent my brand new board in. I lived with the problem- Asus problem.

2 out of 5 eggsproblems with display

Pros: I am putting together this system for a business that will manage over than 3000 items in a super market and handle 4 cashiers that do credit card transactions and customer receipts, inventory, etc... it has to be running 24/7 and i think this motherboard can handle that without a problem. according to the features and specification i found this is the best fit for my Intel Exon processor with socket #1150. But as of now i am still having minor problems, I called Asus many times and no one seems to be able to help. please read the cons for more details.

Cons: So i am trying to connect this motherboard to an old Monitor display that support VGA connection only, I was like since the motherboard has an integrated graphics support then I don't need to buy a graphic card since my main use of this board doesn't require too much graphics.

BUT i have tried more than 7 display Port -> VGA / Mini Display Port -> VGA and HDMI -> VGA and none works !!!! I returned all of them. Then i called Asus and explained the problem, they said there is a software that we need to email you that fixes the VGA support. waited for 3 days no body emailed anything called again they said sorry we will email it to you shortly and after 1 day still nothing!

So i bought a new Display with HDMI port, connected the display directly to the motherboard still nothing comes up on the screen

I have an old MSI graphic card, plugged it in connect it to the screen with VGA cable. It worked just fine!!!! What the hell !! i don't wanna use a graphic card i want to have the motherboard connected directly to the monitor but its been driving me crazy i can't get it to work!!

Now i just don't know what to do, and my boss need the system running in 2 more weeks :/ :/ :/

1 out of 5 eggsDOA Twice!!

Pros: I want this board! Great features, great specs and looks good.

Cons: Will not post lights on board all work but I cannot get the board to post at all. Keep getting error code "AE". Tried taking out battery to clear CMOS, flashed the bios with the latest bios, one stick RAM, rotated RAM, removed video card and ran on board video, nothing works. sometimes get the error code "99" Tech support said board was DOA. Newegg was great got new board. Guess what, exact same issues!! tried all the same remedies no results. Michelle from tech support said Newegg may have a bad batch of boards and that she will research error codes more and call me back in 30 mins, I must of misunderstood her cause its been three days and she hasn't called, she must of said 30 days. Guess I'll RMA second board and see what happens.

Other Thoughts: I really want this board to work, other ASUS build have been great and I really need this workstation for my work.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsStable Motherboard with all the bells and whistles

Pros: I haven't build a system in a few years, but this motherboard had so many features that I haven't seen or heard of before, I had to actually read the manual. It was painful believe me. The motherboard's heatsinks really dissipated the heat well, I was actually pleasantly surprised. It wasn't hot, but was warm and seemed evenly distributed. This main board just felt like quality from the moment I took it out of the box. The included accessories were nice but I didn't need them. I bought two of these boards and neither have disappointed me. I am running VMware ESXi 5.5 and I haven't had a problem yet. I am booting ESXo off the internal usb header. The two Intel i210 Network Interfaces are fully supported and are already included with the OEM ESXi 5.5 update 1 build. Both system are running very cool and draw around 45watts each at idle running an Intel i7-4771 processor with 32GB G.SKill DDR3-1600 memory. I am happy with the purchase of these mainboards.

Cons: None that I can think of

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic!

Pros: Has all one would want. It runs smooth as silk while gaming. Win 8 is fast fast fast. Win 7 is great also. Put an i5 4670k in, and it is running great. I recommend this board highly. XMP to 1866 no issues what so ever.

Cons: Pciex 3.0 x 2 seems a bit weird, I put 2 x gtx 670's in and my gaming/slowed down quickly. Need to figure this bios out, the issue could be me.

Other Thoughts: Kingston beast ddr3 1866 run fantastic in this board.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome WS Board

Pros: Has a nice high memory oc
great pcie support
good raid support
can fully scale two pcie slots which is great for two dual gpu cards
I didn't have to update any bios to have anything running properly
The code readout is super awesome, saves a lot of time in hardware and software troubleshooting
All components perform as advertised
Dr. Power is a great feature

Cons: I guess it's too good for some people

Other Thoughts: It's not like other board where you are spending the first hours of your build updating bios to make sure all your ultra expensive hardware works right like it is with pretty much all the 2011 boards. The bios looked polished and were easy to use and understand . Dual slot cards fit perfectly fine next to each, in fact they are seated at the same distance apart as my sabertooth board. I use a trash coolmax 1200w with dr power feature just in case and I have never had any issues even under intense oc. the psu only failed once under heavy voltages due to coolmax having trashy inefficient products. This board monitors and gives feedback to pretty much everything you do. All of these board failures and issues in the reviews can easily be avoided and fixed with the code readouts, warning speaker, led indicators, dr power, etc. There is no reason to not know the cause of malfunctions on this board.

4 out of 5 eggsNot practical for air cooled multi graphics cards

Pros: - Great quality, feels sturdy
- No issues to report, worked great out of the box
- Lots of features, tons of room for expansion

Cons: - The PCI Express slots are too close together to fit many dual slot cards at all.. and the ones that do fit are too close together for any reasonable cooling performance

Other Thoughts: If you're going to do dual slot cards, make sure that they do not have a backplate that sticks out too much, otherwise they simply will not fit at all. Even if you can get dual slot cards in here, just be sure they are water cooled. It's impossible to cool them on air effectively. Single slot cards would perform much better on air here.

2 out of 5 eggsThis is not a worstation class motherboard

Pros: This is denitely a top-end board with good specs. However, it is not suited for workstations.

Cons: It is not ECC memory capable.

Other Thoughts: This is denitely a well built board with good specs. However, in our view, it is not suited for workstations because it cannot handle ECC memory. We were looking for a micro-atx sized board that can handle ECC memory and has high quality video and sound build in. There seems to be none on the market. We ended up buying P9D-WS server boards and added high end silent video and sound cards.

Dear manufacturer. If you read this, please make a note that there is a considerable market for "small" motherboards with ECC memory and high end sound/video. (Please take a look at the new Mac-Pro - ECC memory, top notch video and sound) This market segment is currently completely ignored by your firm and everyone else in the industry, excetp Apple! Please make ECC memory available on micro-atx boards with built-in high quality video and sound.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback on the Z87-WS motherboard. All of our customers' feedback is welcomed and this is no exception. I will make sure to notate your suggestion and pass it along to the proper channels. Although the motherboard did not meet your expectations, we are glad to know you decided on the P9D-WS motherboard. Should you have any questions about the motherboard or ASUS, please let me know through email.

Regards,

Mark
