1 out of 5 eggsTerrible asus customer service

Pros: looks great.

Cons: for now, it gets 1 egg seeing how I can't even start with step one of the build since the i/o shield is nowhere to be found in the retail box. contacted asus and they won't send me one for the board because "they can't". Rep said to buy it on their estore and I couldn't even find it there. I shouldn't have to buy something that was supposed to be packaged along with the board.

Other Thoughts: Pitiful customer service from Asus.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Great motherboard everything works well. GUI BIOS helps as well as providing some minor tools for overclocking things.

Cons: Problem I had was installing Evo 212 heatsink and fan, it took up the space over one of the ram slots which as of right now can't be used. Just the proximity of the RAM slot to cpu.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Budget Gaming Board

Pros: Very Solid Performance. Handles moderate overclocking without issues. UEFI Bios is convenient for installing OS via external devices.

Good aesthetics.

Nice heatsinks and cooling on the board.

Cons: There are boards out there that offer the same features and reliability at slightly less cost, however I don't mind paying a little extra for the aesthetics and cooling features.

Other Thoughts: Always buy boards based on price, features ,and stability ( judged by consumer reviews).
High performance and enthusiast boards do not offer any benefits aside from aesthetics.
Reputable brands like Asus, ASRock, MSI, Gigabyte, and EVGA offer solid products. Choose one that has what you want based on price.

3 out of 5 eggsGood out-of-production card for OC but has issues

Pros: Very extensive OC related controls like power delivery to a whole new level. Has all the stuff one would expect in this price range of motherboards. USB 3.0 ports are driven by Asmedia (?) chip which needs a driver -- comes with the motherboard DVD.

Seems to work fine with all its limitations after 6 months of light use.

Cons: OC Profiles (or whatever profiles you wish to store) are kind of one way path -- you can only add to a profile but can never erase one. How hard could that be considering the other parts of the BIOS are moderately complex code.

Sound path, sepcially the AUX port to record from another sound source, is very noisy... much more so than a 6 year old Gigabyte EP45-UD3R! Using the same source and same cable the Gigabyte can record good quality sound -- but not in this newer ASUS board. I agree I did not spend much time troubleshooting this but must I do that on a new board?

I tried add a secod CPU fan on the 212 EVO cooler in push-pull mode. So, I used an Arctic F12 PWM PST (PWM Sharing Technology) fan and as soon as I powered on, the mobo started beep beep beep... basically, it is not able to read the speed of the CPU fan. So, I put the thing back as it was -- but the motherboar never recovered! I had to set "Ignore fan speed" in the BIOS setup from that point onwards.

I needed to ship the rig to a different city. As I started to dismantle it, I remembered that the DRAM slots have only single-sided ejection lever. Trying not to get the G-Skill chip in an oblique position, I pulled as hard as I could without breaking something. Guess what? They just wont come out no matter how much I tried! If I press on the single ejection lever, the chip gets into oblique position and that can cause other issues like stiripping the solder traces from the PCIe connector of the DRAM chips.
If you buy this card make sure to buy the right DRAM because changing them could be a whole new experience!
The newer version (so called PRO version with 2 truly parallel PCIe-16 slots) of this board selling right now also does not have the standard DRAM ejector -- they are single-sided only as I see in the photo.

Other Thoughts: Wonder how much savings ASUS has made by going to a single-sided DRAM ejector -- a few cents? Use your bean counters judiciously ASUS!

5 out of 5 eggsasus m5a99x evo r2.0

Pros: 1. North Bridge nice and cool
2. Very Stable
3. Overclocked amd 8200 3.5ghz to 4.6 ghz, Rock Solid
4. Crucial low-profile 1600 ddr 8gbs 1.35v cas8 2t, overclocked to 2100mhz 1.65v cas7 1t...Rock Solid
5. pci express rock solid
6. asmedia usb and xchi solid
8. amd 14.4 raid or achi solid 150mb-300mb average

This motherboard is the best AMD motherboard out, I tried a few before arriving at this board.

Cons: The only 2 cons

1. You cannot set sata 5-6 to AHCI while sata 1-4 are RAID, you are stuck with IDE/RAID, RAID/RAID OR AHCI/AHCI...so running SATA 5-6 ssd as achi system drive with SATA 1-4 raid configuration is not an option.

2. Asus ai suite has never really been stable with windows. Its really a shame because I like the software, but dont run it due to the stability issues. No biggy because I use bios to change settings and use speedfan, and hwinfo for fan, temp configs.

Other Thoughts: I truly am happy with this board. This board is the best overclocking I have seen in a while. And is truly the coolest(temp), and most stable board I have owned period.

I play every game out as of 12/7/2014 on ultra with no lag!

System:
asus m5a99x evo r2

asus 290 2gb ram, overclocked, maxed with asus tweak

samsung 120gb ssd evo basic

8 internal fans, running speedfan config, 600rpm-2000rpm
(system never breaks 55c barrier)

amd 8200 3.5ghz 8 core, overclocked 4.6ghz

crucial 1600mhz 8gb lowprofile 1.35v ddr3, overclocked, 2133mhz 1.65v ddr3 1T

2 old westerdigital 500gb drives AHCI running in a software raid configuration

bluray burner sata running in ide mode
other 3 drives running in ahci mode IDE/AHCI

1 out of 5 eggsBig Paper Weight

Pros: -Nice layout.

Cons: -All three PCIe slot do not work so I cannot assess anything else about this motherboard.
At start-up, I get the Bios beep code for No VGA detected. I tried two working graphics cards in the different PCIe slots to no avail. Because of this issue, my computer will not start it just beeps.

Other Thoughts: ASUS customer support has been no help what so ever. I sent an e-mail stating that it is a new motherboard for a new build and they actually asked if it could be a driver issue and asked if I had installed any new hardware. I can't even get an operating system on my computer...what the heck ASUS!!!
I can't get an RMA because I already sent in the UPC for a rebate. So currently I am stuck with a REALLY expensive paper weight. I would not recommend this or any other ASUS product due their obviously poor quality control. If this was a refurbished motherboard, then I might be able to understand having this issue, but this is a new motherboard!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsLikin' Lights...

Pros: -Little LED lights let you know where you slipped up (more or less).
-4 RAM slots.
-Looks sturdy; we'll see whether or not it bends under the might of my Noctua.
-BIOS was straightforward and easy to manoever for a first timer.

Cons: -RAM slots only clip on one side?

Other Thoughts: It's a bit odd that the RAM only has one clip rather than two, but in the end it wasn't a problem; there is an audible click when you push the stick in, and the top latch holds everything securely.

1 out of 5 eggsmotherboard not working

Pros: If the motherboard worked, i would have nothing bad to say, but since it doesn't, i have nothing good to say.

Cons: I just built a new rig from scratch. All of my parts were purchased from Newegg. It sucks that my family and I have been newegg customers for years and never had a problem until now. Once i connect everything and plug in my power supply, my whole computer starts, but i get no signal to my monitor & my power/reset buttons dont work. I have to RMA asap.

4 out of 5 eggsSecond Time Around

Pros: Lots of SATA ports, runs cool. Easy to install. Runs like a champ. Love the Q connector which allows you to install the front panel leads on the header and then snap it place after you install the mobo. A real must for us ham fisted types.

Cons: Could use more USB 3.0 ports. Two is not enough.

Other Thoughts: This is the second one I have owned. I trashed the other one while installing it in a new case. My fault.

5 out of 5 eggsmade for raw power

Pros: This board has taken my FX9370 with a Corsair TX 650 supply and Hyper 212EVO with push-pull aftermarket fans and 8 gb of Crucial 1866 XT Sport RAM (overclocked to 1931)-to 4.88ghz. Hyper Transport running at 2700, NB 2277 (stock multipliers.) My normal startup overclock is set to 4.5 ghz. I can then shift to 4.88 within the OS using Turbo EVO. Surely this is all right at the edge of the CPU cooler's capacity, but on the other hand the Hyper212's collateral breeze plus my Antec 305's strategically placed fans keep the motherboard temps surprisingly cool. Am getting consistent Cinebench Demo CPU score of 768

Cons: This board had given me fits trying for full Cool and Quiet operation, Turbo or no, but once I tried most of the Smart Digi Key VRM management suggestions and just went with a straight overclock, my troubles have disappeared. The Key seemed to be CPU LLC set to Ultra Hi. CPU volts set to 1.368, NB volts to 1.150, DRAM volts set to a mere 1.370v. Perhaps a Con for some, but, in the end not really a deal breaker for me. I may not have had the same Cool and Quiet problems using, say an FX 6350...

Other Thoughts: I had RMA'ed this board, sent it in, and ASUS Service sent it right back to me 'repaired' with no explanation. They may 've replaced the bios chip, otherwise there was no evidence of any repair. This was originally bought as an Open Box. No doubt this board tested fine for them and may 've even been superior at overclocking. My thought is that I would have gotten to the advantages of this board much sooner had I employed LLC Ultra Hi sooner.
Note: The CPU OPT. fan header would seem to be under the same speed control as the CPU fan header. If you are looking to drive a water pump with a fixed 12v, you may want to pick a different header!
