5 out of 5 eggsTribute Review

Pros: I'm writing this as a kind of tribute to my motherboard. 6 years of service with not a single problem the whole while. Clockwork is the best was to phrase how it works and as to my experience with it, well, I'm sad to see it finally go.

Cons: For the time I had it none what so ever. It didn't last forever is about the worst thing I can say!

Other Thoughts: I know this is discontinued, but my experience was so good that when reviewing my old purchase I couldn't help but submit a review.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat buy

Pros: Everything this board is supposed to do has been great. I would highly recommend this board to anyone looking for a mid-level board, or for a backup.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I bought this board for my Phenom II X4 920 cpu, and it has handled everything without fail. I do not O/C, and have NEVER received a BSOD. It has been running Win7 64 without issues. I have upgraded the bios, but stopped as I didn't want to ruin anything.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not support 1066 Memory as stated

Pros: The board has been stable for me for a couple years now.

Cons: I did notice it was running slower than I thought it would and noticed my 1066 memory was not running at that speed. I have tried everything under the sun to get the memory to run at this speed to no avail...

1 out of 5 eggsnot for overclockers

Pros: Good chipset cooling,6 sata ports, onboard video with hdmi.

Cons: Vcore is not adjustable and that is a necessity. x8 sli, hybrid is a joke.

Other Thoughts: Why would asus release a board where you can adjust ht voltage, mem voltage, and nb voltage but not vcore. it has cpu vtt voltage but that is not the same as vcore.

never buying asus again.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Support & Customer Service

Pros: Easy Installation. Easy Configuration

Cons: Bad Board Layout. The connectors for the SATA and the IDE are facing the right of the board instead of up. Making installing hard drives next to them extremely difficult without bending a lot of cables. I have a huge case the Antec 1200 and still had trouble getting things installed. the HDMI port is only an Audio HDMI Port. The board worked fine for almost a year then the NIC went out on the board. I contacted Customer support using Live Chat and the support reps were more eager to get off the call than they were to help me resolve the issue. They did not issue a case#, they didn't take any of my information, so when it was time to get an RMA issued I had to go through explaining the problem three times before an RMA Was issued. The RMA process is terrible. First time RMA requests are not elligible for advanced RMA. So, the main part and heart of my computer has to fail TWICE before ASUS is willing to issue an advanced RMA

Other Thoughts: ASUS Customer Service and RMA Service are mediocre at best and terrible compared to other service I recieved from other companies.

The refusal to issue an advanced RMA on the first time makes me wonder about the quality of the product. If this product was so great why would it have to break twice before they are willing to issue an advanced RMA. A motherboard failing once is bad enough and leads me to question using the manufacturer again for a valuable piece of hardware. I am very disappointed in the way that ASUS handles such claims and how they approach customer service.

Being an experienced IT professional and a seasoned PC builder, I would definitely not suggest buying any more ASUS motherboards based on my experience with their customer support and their level of service.

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad...

Pros: The system took the CPU without a hiccup, which is usually a problem when it comes to newer technology (it was pretty new when I bought it back in February). BIOS updates help keep things fresh. Supports a large amount of RAM and even DDR 1066 (PC2 8500), but that's where the cons come in..

Cons: I've been using the QUALIFIED G-Skill RAM (One out of FOUR models that are "qualified" to work on this board) and I can't get it to run at 1066! If I set it to 1066 in BIOS, it hangs and hangs and hangs until I have to do a good ol' jumper reset. Which brings me to their C.P.R. feature which seems to be a little "half-baked" at best. I've tried a MILLION things to get this RAM to run at 1066 speed and I can't. Even this qualified RAM puts itself at 5-5-5-18 speed, unlike the 5-5-5-15 that the RAM says it is and the motherboard manual says it is. I can set it to 5-5-5-15 without an issue, but why should I have to? It still won't run at 1066! I believe the issue is the mem voltage, only being 1.8v, but oddly enough, even changing it in the BIOS to 2.1v isn't enough -- it's still at 1.8v according to Everest.

Other Thoughts: Terrible board layout. Cords all over the place due to just one of the oddest layouts I've ever seen. Also, lol @ Asus Express Gate, does anyone REALLY use this?

System Specs:
Windows Vista 64-bit
AMD Phenom II X4 920 @ 3.24GHz
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
GeForce 9600 GT
1x Seagate Barracuda 250GB
2x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200GB

4 out of 5 eggsGood board

Pros: Runs perfectly to this day from buying it in July. The board worked and started fine (albeit after a BIOS flash to support my CPU) and has been running ever since!

Cons: Unfortunately, for me, this board has a few major flaws. One being the 24-pin ATX connector is not even on the right side of the board. Layout isn't exactly pristine and perfect but for something this cheap, you can still have other options with better layouts. The nVidia chipset can't overclock the CPU (955) past 3.6 without becoming unstable and I've tried everything including only one stick of RAM. Board is sometimes finicky when it comes to leaving external hard drives plugged in and might not start. There are too many cons for me to give a 5 star rating but ASUS is a great company nonetheless.

Other Thoughts: I would buy an AMD chipset board if anyone is looking at this...

Phenom II 955 BE
This board
8GB of DDR2 800
eVGA nVidia GTX275 896MB
Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB HDD/ WD 250GB
Corsair H50 in push/pull with stock fan and Antec Tricool. Exhaust out back of Antec 300 :)

1 out of 5 eggssrharding

Pros: NONE

Cons: I had a M3N72-D fail after only 3-months - unrecoverable harware error. So I ordered and replaced with an identical unit from NewEgg. This one failed again after 3 moths with the same failure. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS MOTHERBOARD!!

Other Thoughts: I have built and used ASUS for nearly 10 years and have never had a problem up until now - very uncommon.

Manufacturer Response:
