2 out of 5 eggsDoes not want to boot

Pros: Works well, when it does boot up. No real stability issues even after having my computer on for days/weeks at a time.

Cons: There is a reason for leaving it on. Once it is off, it is a real hassle to turn on again. Frequently shuts off at "Decompressing bios to ram" stage of boot.
CPU-z and NVidia's web based driver scan detect chipset as 740a instead of 750a.

Other Thoughts: Will rate better if situation is resolved. Removed chipset heatsinks and chipset is labeled as nforce 750a. Currently working with nvidia and msi on cause for boot failure and chipset issue.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat buy

Pros: On board optical and integrated 8000 series video. Not a bad price. Includes automated driver update software.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking to use SLI in the near future, but don't have the cash, this will keep you running until you do.

5 out of 5 eggsPhenom II X4 955 WOW!

Pros: Had this board a while now. Flashed it with BIOS v.3.5 and took a chance. Yep! Phenom II X4 955 fired right up. OC'ed to 3.683 GHz so far.

Cons: WARNING! After CPU install got straight to BIOS and set to fail safe settings FIRST. When I went into BIOS the CPU voltage was set way too high. Aster that I started to OC.

Other Thoughts: So far I'm hitting a wall at 3.7 GHz.

5 out of 5 eggsI guess I got the good one...

Pros: Hybrid SLI using 8600 PCI-E if you need it, frankly I bought at 9800GT and turned the Hybrid SLI off. Will recognize any chip socket 940 and up, X2, Phenom, Phenom II etc.

Circi-Pipe, looks cool, LEDs through case look nice.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Some people say they are having trouble with their board recognizing their 7750 Kuma, I had no problems, originally had BIOS 3.1, but recently upgraded to BIOS 3.4 to use with Windows 7 RC. Also if you own the 7750 Kuma, it's a Phenom with 1 or 2 cores disabled, so you can run 1066 memory just set in the DRAM settings 1:2:66 and you're good to go.

I don't overclock, though if I wanted to it has plenty of features, multiplier is unlocked on the 7750 Kuma and any Black edition CPUs.

Stock cooling, 30C idle, 40C load, only thing I recommend is not using the Dual-Core Center as it will cause your LEDs to report incorrectly. Use CoreTemp for CPU and nVidia System Utilities for all other temps.

My rig:
MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum
MSI N9800GT-OC 512 v1
4GB Corsair XMS PC8500
1x WD 80GB SATA
1x WD 80GB PATA
1x WD 320GB SATA
Ultra X3 600W PSU
Windows 7 RC x64

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Board

Pros: great board, I like the spacing of the slots and the four sata ports that don't get blocked by large video cards. Dual Ide ports are good for upgraders with ide drives. the leds are nice in a clear side case. Reconized my Phenom II 940 BE right away w/o a bios upgrade

Cons: CPUid says the northbridge is 740a not a 750a

3 out of 5 eggsDoesn't allow you to changes voltages...

Pros: This motherboard is pretty good. Recognizes AMD Phenom X4 and Phenom II X4 chips. Runs amazing if your ram is set to 800mhz. Overclocking is not very easy as it does not let you change any voltages at all...

Cons: My OCZ Reaper 1066mhz ram doesn't function well with this board at all. When it is clocked at 800mhz, it is fine, but when it is clocked at 1066mhz I get lockups, freezes, and blue screens galore.

Other Thoughts: Many of you advertise this as a great board for overclocking, however, all of my voltage options and overclocking options are greyed out? Why is that? Without being able to change my Rams voltage, the ram it is advertised to use doesn't work...

1 out of 5 eggsWorks great without a monitor plugged in!

Pros: This is a great choice for systems not needing video. Very versatile.

Cons: If, as is the case with most of us (including me), you need video this board could turn out to be not a great choice.

Other Thoughts: I have had very bad with this board. Unless magic happens, I'm about to RMA this board. This is a replacement for another such board which also had an onboard video failure (albeit of a slightly different nature).

4 out of 5 eggsLinux compatible

Pros: Hardware wise, this is a pretty good motherboard. Has high quality parts and plenty of capacitors. Doesn't put PCI between the SLI slots so if you get a video card with a monster heatsink (like I did) you won't lose a PCI slot to it. Supports 8GB RAM, has plenty of SATA, e-SATA, firewire, USB, and a pretty good sound chipset. Has two IDE channels for 4 drives max. NVidia 750a chipset is VERY good!

Software wise: WORKS WITH LINUX (Ubuntu 9.04/64-bit). I haven't tried it with previous Linux distributions, but if you're running Ubuntu 8.10 (and maybe 8.04?) you might need to pass "pci=nomsi" to the kernel. With Ubuntu 9.04 you do not. dmraid works. full sound support and support for onboard peripherals (FireWire, USB, etc.). Haven't tested if the e-SATA chipset is supported yet, but I'd suspect so.

Oh and of course it works with Windows (XP for now, probably vista later)--came with driver CD's for both which is VERY nice.

Cons: I'd like if the motherboard supported 16GB instead of the 8GB of RAM, but honestly 8GB of RAM is pretty good. The motherboard heatsinks are a little sharp so careful with the first video card. Also, there is plenty of USB expansion (4 ports on motherboard itself and up to 6 ports I believe via expanders) but it'd be nice if there were 2-4 additional USB ports on the motherboard itself.

The biggest problem for me was connecting the front audio/USB to the motherboard. The usb headers weren't bad, but the audio headers were in the FARTHEST corner of the motherboard! Not the smartest move on MSI's part.

Other Thoughts: I have this with an NVidia 9600GT (Gigabyte), AMD Phenom 9650 and 4GB of Kingston X RAM (cas: 4-4-4-12). I have a dual-boot setup with a 300gb drive for linux and 300gb drive for windows. Then I've got a nvidia RAID5 array of 3x500GB hard drives that I use in Linux. I run multiple VM sessions at the same time all coming from the RAID array. In addition I use that array for storing all other files... Performance is pretty good and I don't notice it very much.

Over all, MSI did a pretty good job on this system. I gave it 4/5 eggs only because I'd like to have seen more USB on the motherboard and more memory along with the crazy placing of the audio headers. Really though, 10 USB *should* be enough and 8GB is pretty reasonable, especially with the other stuff they give--firewire and esata. I'd definately recommend this!
