1 out of 5 eggsPoor Experience

Pros: Good capabilities for modern CPUs with plenty of slots for peripherals and equipment. I am excited to take advantage of the fast charging slots for my various devices, but I haven't had an opportunity yet. I have only had the board running for <1 day, so there is little I can review at this point.

Cons: The first board I received was DOA. There was no POST tone or error tone produced during startup. All of the equipment was deemed compatible with the board, and the CPU, GPU, PSU, HDs, etc. were tested in other working machines in my lab space or multimeters/load testers in the case of the PSU. I determined that the motherboard was likely dead. I sent the board back for an RMA 29 days ago and did not receive a replacement until yesterday. This means that for four weeks, I had no primary computer to perform my research and labwork, forcing me to work with significantly less. Since I wanted to make sure that the motherboard was the only dead part of the new computer, the delay meant that $55 in rebates was allowed to expire.

If you are worried about inferior equipment, I encourage you to consider the device protection options that Newegg provides. Hopefully they would protect you from getting [emphatic vocabulary omitted at the request of Newegg] like I did.

Other Thoughts: The board seems to be worthwhile, and perhaps I will learn to be happy with it in time. But the poor experience has incurred this unpleasant review and a future avoidance of Gigabyte equipment.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Motherboard

Pros: I bought this board on October 13, 2011 which was 2.8 years ago as of writing. The board has been a solid performer during all that time until now. Of the three 990FX boards I've used, it has consistently produced the best overclocks and provided the greatest stability. It didn't even balk when I coated it with polyurethane back in 2011 and used it for dry ice runs. Its onboard USB 3.0 controller seems to behave well with anything I plug into it and is nearly twice as fast as the one on my MSI 990FXA-GD80V2. The slot layout allows for users with many cards to be able to fit them unlike some other boards.

Cons: The only problem is that the board is built kind of cheap. The heatsink retention mechanisms for both the CPU voltage regulators and chipset heatsinks are plastic. After extended use as a daily setup in my case, the plastic eventually became brittle and snapped when lightly bumped while unplugging the ATX power connector. Other boards like the MSI 990FXA-GD80V2 use metal for this purpose; I suppose MSI learned their lesson after the K9A2 Platinum had essentially the same issue.

Other Thoughts: It worked great for just shy of three years. That isn't a bad investment, but a 5 cent plastic clip taking a motherboard out of service is a silly failure none the less.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy with this product

Pros: Sturdy board, plenty of ports and room for expansion, quick and easy install (popped right into rear panel and over my grounding screws with no issues)

Cons: None that I could really think of. I am not a huge fan of how the SATA ports are right up against the edge of my case, but I am sure this wouldn't be a problem with a full-tower.

Other Thoughts: I recently started building my first computer, I originally went out and bought a Gigabyte GA-970 that turned out to be DOA. Newegg was great and gave me a full refund so I figured I would upgrade to the 990 chip-set just to be safe in case I wanted to have an easier time upgrading parts in the future.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I only wish they would make a white version...

3 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: Nice layout, good power phase, dual BIOS.

Cons: Not enough fan headers, horrible BIOS, poor software package...most of if is bloatware and powertune is a joke. If it wasn't part of a bundle I would send it back and get a sabertooth.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent board, with a few flaws

Pros: Aesthetically pleasing layout, built-in heatsinks for the north and south bridge, easy to access and read the layout of the panel connectors. Good spacing on the PCI-E slots. Good BIOS, though it takes some getting used to. Read the manual of course.

Cons: Wouldn't POST at first. I thought I'd encountered the issue where the BIOS wouldn't recognize the newer architecture processors, or worse just had a dead board. Turns out that there was a short somewhere on the board. It would get power but nothing else. I can't find the short, but it worked after I put the anti-static bag the board came in UNDER it and then mounted it. Crazy, right? Well it worked, and continues to work. This likely means that the board NEEDS taller stand offs, or in one of the mounting grommets touches a trace or something silly like that. It may also mean that the prongs from the fixtures on the board's underside are too long in some spots, hence the taller standoffs.

Other Thoughts: 4 eggs, if only because of the design flaw. GIGABYTE if you're reading I recommend mentioning the grounding issue somewhere visible or even going so far as to include tall standoff screws in the packaging.

Make sure you isolate any problems with shorts to your case. Test the board OUT of the case if you're having problems first, and give it a second to POST. It takes a couple to show on screen. Don't be impatient. You may also try finding a way to insulate the underside of the board against the case like I did. I almost RMA'd this board, but then tried testing it outside of the case and it POSTed fine.

3 out of 5 eggsNot fully utilized

Pros: *Looks great
*sturdy build

Cons: *ram slot failed after about a month of use, had to move the ram to a different spot for the computer to boot.
*has been slow at booting up.

both of the cons can possibly be user related though.

*doesnt have built in ethernet driver, which was annoying.
*no onboard graphics.

Other Thoughts: i havnt got to use crossfire with this board yet like i planned (the 2 x16 pcie). despite this first bump in the road this board is pretty good. i am going to return this board for another one, this one may be a bit of a lemon but i cant get over how sexy the board is.

5 out of 5 eggsBest board I've owned

Pros: Stable. I cook this thing O.C. to play Eve Online at full graphics in fleet fights. Mined bitcoin for a few months with it with 2 vid cards running at about 65 degrees C 24/7. No over heating issues in an open-air case.
10 USB connections can connect everything all the time.
Win 8.1, CentOS, SuSe all work fine.

Cons: Never
