The GA-Z68XP-UD3 motherboard is based on the Intel Z68 Express Chipset supporting the new 2nd generation Intel Core processors. Delivering the very best that Intel 6 series chipsets have to offer, including a significant performance boost with Intel Smart Response Technology, the first ever mSATA drive connectors on a standard desktop PC motherboard, and GIGABYTE's proprietary Touch BIOS technology, GIGABYTE Z68 series motherboards put users in the driver seat, allowing them to take total control over how their system operates and performs to best match their individual computing needs.

  • newegg Onboard mSATA for Intel SLC SSDs and Smart Response Technology GIGABYTE Z68 motherboards are equipped with the much anticipated Intel Smart Response Technology, allowing users to experience system performance similar to SSD-only systems. Intel Smart Response technology works by using intelligent block-based caching of frequently used applications to improve system performance and responsiveness. In fact, GIGABYTE Z68 motherboards with Intel Smart Response Technology are able to outperform hybrid drive systems by more than 2X (PC Mark Vantage HDD test) and HDD-only systems by as much as 4X (PC Mark Vantage HDD test) and deliver a 60% performance improvement over HDD-only systems in PC Mark Vantage Suite.
  • newegg GIGABYTE EZ Smart Response The GIGABYTE EZ Smart Response utility is a simple application that allows users to quickly and easily configure their system for Intel Smart Response Technology. In the past, enabling Intel Smart Response meant users needed to enter the BIOS in order to configure their system for RAID mode, which then required a complete reinstall of the operating system. Once that processes was complete, users then needed to install the Intel Rapid Storage Utility as well as configure Intel's Smart Response Technology. GIGABYTE EZ Smart Response does all of this automatically, without users having to perform a complicated install process. This allows them to quickly and effortlessly enjoy a significant boost in system performance.
  • newegg Switchable Graphics with LucidLogix Virtu GPU Virtualization GIGABYTE Z68 motherboards are enabled with LucidLogix Virtu GPU Virtualization technology which allows users to dynamically switch between their built-in graphics and their high-end, 3D discrete graphics cards. This is ideal for gamers who require high-resolution gaming and still want to enjoy the built-in media features of 2nd generation Intel Core processors. In so doing, switchable graphics helps to dramatically reduce PC graphics power consumption.
  • newegg GIGABYTE Touch BIOS Navigating through the BIOS to change system settings can be a daunting task for users not familiar with control “F” functions and mouse-less navigation. While some EFI BIOS try to address this with a mouse friendly environment, many implementations still lack a certain ease-of-use necessary for most people. With GIGABYTE Touch BIOS, GIGABYTE engineers have completely re-imagined how users can interact with their BIOS, allowing for a more intuitive user experience. In fact, with a touch screen monitor, GIGABYTE Touch BIOS is as easy to use as most apps on your iPhone.
  • newegg Ultra Durable 3 The GIGABYTE Ultra Durable 3 features twice the copper for both the power and ground layer of the PCB, dramatically lowering system temperature by spreading the heat from the critical area (such as CPU power zone) throughout the entire PCB. GIGABYTE also lowers the PCB impedance by 50%, which helps to reduce electrical waste and further lowers component temperatures. A 2x Copper layer design also provides improved signal quality and lower EMI (Electromagnetic Interference), providing better system stability and allowing for great margins for overclocking.
  • newegg Multi-GPU Support with CrossFireX and SLI Flexible graphics capabilities supported for either CrossFireX or SLI deliver the ultimate in graphics performance for gaming enthusiasts who demand the highest frame rates without compromising on resolution.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going strong after 18 months

Pros: I've been using revision 1.0 of this product for 18 months.

I love all the ports on this motherboard, since I run a bunch of hard drives in a big case. I'm not super careful when I handle the motherboard, but this one has held up to whatever rough handling I can dish out. My previous motherboard was a somewhat similar Gigabyte model. I passed it along to a friend and he is still using it without problems.

Gigabyte does support their motherboards with new BIOS updates. This board is now up to version 10.

Cons: A few weeks ago, this motherboard started making a high pitched whine that was really loud and annoying. After some research on the net, I simply updated the BIOS to the latest version and the noise instantly went away.

The documentation is barely adequate. The manual should be five times the size.

The @BIOS utility was not able to download and install the new BIOS like it was supposed to, but I worked around it pretty easily.

Other Thoughts: I don't do any overclocking, as I'm into quiet and cool systems myself.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat motherboard, terrible documentation

Pros: This motherboard, when upgraded to BIOS to UEFI makes a great basis for a hackintosh. Combined with an IvyBridge i3 and a GeForce GT 610, awesome. :)

Cons: However, there is very little/no documentation on how to perform the BIOS upgrade (requires creating a Windows 98 boot disk using an HP utility and a small flash drive, dropping a batch file, the UEFI file and an executeable in that disk and booting to it... Would have been nice if that info was on the Gigabyte website rather than forcing me to search all over kingdom come to find it.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking to build a hackintosh, this board works great with ML

3 out of 5 eggsSerial Port Issues

Pros: Have had for a few months - bought a few for builds at work... Have worked fairly decent.

Cons: The biggest issue I have found so far is the serial port. According to the device manager - "This device is working properly" - but it is not. I cannot even get a simple loop-back to work - it appears that no communications are getting through...

4 out of 5 eggsbest SLI board in price range

Pros: one of the best boards for SLI (in the price range)

Cons: the LAN gave out on arrival, using one of the slots for a lan card (so no SLI)

Other Thoughts: have not had any issues with overclocking with an i5 3750k to 4.5ghz or general use of the board. would recommend it to anyone

3 out of 5 eggsGreat until it failed.

Pros: Features, msata, SATAIII.

Cons: SATA 0 controller failed after about 18 mos.

Other Thoughts: I too am getting boot loops. The error logs reveal the SATA 0 controller is failing. Swapped systemboard to an identical known good system, new OS load, issue happened again. Not sure if I will RMA it since the cost to ship will not be cheap. Might as well spend it on a new board, possibly different brand. If they would cover shipping it might be worth my time/effort. I have owned several Gigabyte boards, this is the first to let me down.

1 out of 5 eggsPower Cycle Problem

Pros: Worked great for 1 to 1/2 years

Cons: Suddenly wouldn't power on anymore. I had not made any hardware or software changes. Sent to Gigabyte RMA. Got board back and it appeared to work very briefly. Now I have the dreaded power cycling problem. Only powers on for about 2 sec then shuts down and restarts again and keeps doing this until power supply is shutoff.

I have removed the board from the case and tried swapping every part. Currently just have one stick of memory and CPU installed but still no success.

With all of the time I have wasted on this plus the cost of a useless RMA, I can't recommend this board to anybody.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your comments. Honest and constructive opinions are always welcome. We apologize for your difficulty with your Gigabyte product.

Repaired products are tested to meet factory default specifications. If your returned board still has issues, it may be one of your components causing the problem. I suggest testing with known good memory, and powersupply. Also, be sure to connect both the 24pin power and the ATX12V power cables.

1 out of 5 eggsBootloop

Pros: Long graphics card did not interfere with the SATA ports.

Cons: After 1.5 years, the MoBo began running the Bootloop. This not a board to buy.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your comments. Honest and constructive opinions are always welcome. We apologize for your difficulty with your Gigabyte product.

After operating 1 1/2 years without problems, you may have experienced a component failure. You may perform your own diagnostics to determing the exact cause.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Had this board since September of 2011, zero issues. Bought a board from another company that ended up being DOA, did some more research and grabbed this board while starting the RMA process for the first board. Running an overclocked i5-2500k, all controlled from the bios with no issues. Running two SSDs in a RAID0 configuration (totally unnecessary and overkill btw...) with the intel hardware controller. No TRIM for the RAID, but not a real issue for me. Two ATI video cards in crossfire. Board meets all my needs.

Cons: The Marvell SATA controller is slow when in RAID0, speeds about where a single drive would be. Easily alleviated by swapping to the Intel controller though.

Other Thoughts: Zero complaints, she's been good to me for a year and a half now.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Motherboard if you don't need more than 8GB RAM

Pros: I have this motherboard for a year now and it is pretty stable. I got the boot loop problem initially and had to RMA the motherboard to Gigabyte. I've been using the replacement motherboard for a year now with 8GB RAM until today when I decided to upgrade the memory to 16GB and the boot loop problem came back :( Fortunately I was able to boot the machine after dowgrading to 8GB RAM.

Cons: Can't use more than 8GB RAM even though the spec says it supports 32GB RAM. The supported memory list on the Gigabyte support site is pretty out of date. How can you put in 32GB RAM using 1/2GB sticks with only 4 slots?
