5 out of 5 eggsWorks perfectly, easily and tech support is great

Pros: With Windows 7 I connected 3 different hard drives, and 2 difference cd-rom drives -- all IDE and not easily compatible with my new SATA desk top.

I just plugged them in (one at a time) and they all ran perfectly. In fact the CD-ROM transfers data thru the Vantec plug as fast as it ever did - 48x on USB 2.0. Faster than any "external" CD drive that I could find.

Another review had inidacted that the power plug could be inserted wrong -- I can't figure that out -- but tech support quickly decoded the plug sequence for me.

I didn't see the on off switch

Cons: Harly any cons -- I couldn't find the "on-off" switch because I didn't fully extend the power cord -- dumb me -- but once again tech support quickly straightened me out.

Other Thoughts: As a result of this experience Vantec gets the preference when I am buying equipment that they make.

5 out of 5 eggsVery useful, defintely worth the money

Pros: Easily and quickly turns most any drive into an external drive once it's pulled out of the computer. In several years, on well over a dozen hard drives at home and at work, from desktops and laptops, it's not failed me yet. I've used just about every configuration it can have. It's absolutely worth the money and effort for trying to rescue sometimes priceless files from problem drives.

Cons: Very minor: Photos in instructions are too dark, but possibly they've been improved by now. I've had to look up info online to be sure I have the connections right. Would be nice to include a bag to keep all the pieces in, but for this price it's understandable. I use a large nylon pencil case (for school binders) to keep it all in.

Other Thoughts: Anyone with half a clue and the ability to remove a drive from a computer should have one of these!

5 out of 5 eggsA lifesaver

Pros: Very easy to use and saved me a ton of hassle when my 5 y/o old computer with IDE drives blew the main board. As I was in a rush and couldn't build my own and had to get a computer off the shelf, the new PC couldn't accept my old drives as it only had SATA connections. This adapter easily let me connect up the old IDE drives to the USB port to pull off all my important items onto the new drives. I will recommend this product to anyone that has a similar problem as I had.

Cons: The power cable was a tighter fit than the regular connectors for the drive which I felt risked damaging the drive since you really had to push to get it on and pull to get it off. Also Vantec really should put a printed copy of basic instructions in the box even though the use is rather straight forward.

4 out of 5 eggsShort cables

Pros: Works as advertised. Plug it in and go.

Cons: Short cables. The USB cable length is ok, but the power cable is kind of short. The power supply uses a standard power cable, so you can extend that, but the cable from the power supply to the drive is a bit short so you need to keep the power supply pretty close to the drive.

Other Thoughts: The 2.5 inch mini IDE connector is built in and doesn't provide any external power source. So if the drive you're using requires more than the 500 milliamps (0.5 Amps) supplied by the USB port, you're out of luck.

This is solvable though, they make mini IDE to IDE adapters that will provide a power connection you can use.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fine in Ubuntu

Pros: Completely plug-and-play (tested on Ubuntu Lucid). Basically, RTM - attach the drive connections, power up the drive and plug in the USB port last. Takes a little time to mount the drive, so just be patient. Also, set your PATA drives to Master and not Cable Select, again as per the manual

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: Does exactly what it advertises, so far.

Cons: No SCSI support?

Other Thoughts: Works, perfect, I have no complaints. Plug in harddrive, mount it. Windows or Linux works great.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is amazing for $20 and free shipping.

Connects all HDs from the last 20 years and then some and even has an on/off switch and every kind of connection you need.

Cons: none so far although possible the fact that you don't get to "octopus it" and connect tons of HDs to a single unit.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfectly

Pros: - Plug and play
- Simple
- Easy to follow directions if you need them
- Works as specified

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought this to easily transfer some files from one of my old IDE hard drives to my new computer (using SATA drives). The USB interface with my old hard drive made it a quick and easy procedure. Hooking this up basically creates a new external drive on your computer, allowing you to freely move folders/files. Easy to use and worth every dollar I spent on it. It is a great product that comes in handy all the time. I have used it for my own use as well as for computer repairs/tune-ups that I have done for others. You won't regret buying this.
