5 out of 5 eggsWorks slick

Pros: It was free (included with 120GB Samsung SSD), and free stuff that works perfectly is always delightful. The adapter clicks into any PCIe-2 slot. A USB cloning adapter ships with the Samsung SSD, so once the cloning is completed, you simply attach it to the Velocity Solo adapter, and boot the computer.

Cons: None whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: There is a potential glitch which the adapter instructions doesn't address: BIOS modification. You must enable booting from LAN ROM or the BIOS won't load the operating system. So open the BIOS first thing and make any necessary changes. The boot order must include LAN, or it's a 'no go'. I was so pleased, I removed the HDD cage from my Lian Li case, which alleviates crowding and improves airflow. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat upgrade - works perfectly

Pros: Using with a OCZ Vector 128gb SATA III. Installed smooth as silk with EX-Gig software. Getting 400MB reads and 290MB writes. I have the 128gb version with a 1TB storage drive. Boot times are amazing. Went from about 1 min+ to about 12 sec. I was also having trouble getting Word to boot in a reasonable amount of time and this drive solved it. I have one game on it (Call of Duty) and load times are down to abut 5 sec.

Cons: Not sure I'm getting the max out of my OCZ SSD but think I'm doing the best I can with my MB.

3 out of 5 eggsClearing things up for you dummies

Pros: Okay guys you need to know what you're dealing with before you go bashing something that you simply don't comprehend. Here's what you need to know.
PCI Express bandwidth works on a per lane basis. There are different versions of PCI Express. Version 1 supports 250MB/sec per lane. Version 2 is 500 MB/sec per lane. Version 3 is 985MB/sec per lane.

Your motheboard chipset determines the version of the PCI Express interface that is supported. Most modern motherboards support Version 2, while very few support Version 3 and when they do it's usually limited to a single x16 slot but that's not the point here.

Older motherboards with Version 1 PCI Express will limit the bandwidth to 250MB/sec per lane. So dropping this card into a version 1 x1 slot will result in around 250MB/sec of throughput. Dropping this card into an x16 slot will still result in only around 250MB/sec. Why? Becasue this card only has 1 data lane, it is x1. It doesn't matter how many lanes are available in the slot you put it in, it will only ever use 1 lane.

So if you want to take better advantage of an ssd that is connected to this card, you'll need to connect it to a PCI Express Version 2.0 slot.

Here' another bit of info for ya. If your motherboard is old enough to only have SATA I ports, you're still better served by using this card on a PCI Express V1.0 x1 slot since 250MB/sec > 188MB/sec.

Now if your motherboard has a SATA II port available, and only has PCI Express V1.0, then the SATA II port is better, 375MB/sec > 250MB/sec.

Hopefully this makes sense and helps someone realize that your main liitation is always going to be what interfaces your motherboard offers.

Tip: If you want to fully realize the potential of an ssd just buy a new motherboard already. SATA III gives 750MB/sec per port of bandwidth, which is more than enough for any consumer grade ssd.

Cons: Some people don't understand and don't do their research.

Other Thoughts: You probably shouldn't write reviews for items if you don't understand them.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what it supposed to do!

Pros: Allows you to avoid cable clutter in your case and have a standalone drive on your PCI-E lane.

Cons: None everyone who complained about this product has no idea about what they bought. You are basically making a Reo Drive for much cheaper and you get to pick the capacity. Older boards may not take advantage of the bandwidth available; however, I tested this out on PCI-E 1X slot and it still pulled over 200MB's!

Other Thoughts: Case and point this adapter works perfectly long as you know what configuration you want to run. It can do mechanical and solid state drives. If you want a standalone media drive then buy a 2.5 hard drive and done, if you want a fast standalone boot up drive then go SSD!

4 out of 5 eggsHigh on Velocity

Pros: 40% performance boost in my setup

Cons: None for me

Other Thoughts: Was getting 220 MB/sec transfer rate, now it's 365 MB/sec. For those who understand such things there's a caveat: With most motherboards, if you have only one PCI-E 2.0 slot populated with a graphics card, the bandwidth will be x16. If you populate the 2nd slot, both slots will have bandwidth of x8. That is how I'm running. If I had a chip with onboard graphics and had only Velocity solo populating a PCI-E 2.0 slot, it would be running at x16 and I would no doubt get a transfer rate better than my current 365MB/sec. Since I'm no gamer and my graphics card is fine running x8, it was worth the small investment. I did not need to clone my drive since I already had an SSD boot drive (Samsung 830 128GB). Just unplugged the storage drive, booted up and Windows 7 recognized it immediately.

1 out of 5 eggsSounds too good to be true

Pros: The idea of making a older mobo with sata ll faster is great. and I fell for it.

Cons: my bad ideas

Other Thoughts: After reading KAV review I hooked
the ssd up directly and found it is much faster than running through Apriccorn Vel-Solo

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy install. Reasonable performance.

Cons: Sub-SATA 3 speeds. I ordered this because I could not enable AHCI on my MOBO. Thus, I was running IDE. Immediately before I received this, I figured out how to enable AHCI on my MOBO (it wasn't as simple as selecting it in the bios). Thus, I was running at SATA3 speeds by the time I received this unit. My SSD would benchmark up to about 200 mb/s on the SATA 3 port. The VelSolo only bencharked at about 150 mb/s. My windows experience index (WEI) dropped from 7.8 to 7.4 (slightly better than IDE) when I switched from SATA3 to this card.

5 out of 5 eggsClever way to add SATA III HDD or SSD

Pros: Posting this to help people understand. There are 3 different versions (tiers) of this product; each uses a different chipset to maximize transfer rates for different installations. The one here is the low end of the line but it may still be useful for folks with SATA HDDs or slower SSDs. The beauty of this product is that it provides SATA III when your motherboard doesn't. It is intended to be used in a PCI Express 2.0 slot to enjoy the max data rate of 500MB/s. However, it is backwards compatible with older PCI Express 1.0 but it will be limited to max data rate of 250 MB/s. The software that comes with it looks very nice, too. Be sure to check out the very detailed information at Apricorn's website.

Cons: Possibly price for some. The 3 versions (levels) are $39, $49, and $99.

Other Thoughts: Giving it 5 Eggs based on research only. In future, will post review after hands-on testing. Be sure to watch the videos on Apricorn's website (links provided by Newegg) and you'll be impressed.

1 out of 5 eggsWhy in the hell would you buy this?

Pros: Good if you have a motherboard so old that it doesn't have sata sockets. If it's that old,it won't have pcie 1-2 either! Just upgrade your MOBO.

Cons: Will only run socket speed(pcie x1)ect.So,you have a fast ssd choked down by the slow interface.

Other Thoughts: This is just a band aid for people who are holding onto that old rig.C'mon, let it go! upgrading can a fun and rewarding experience.Do that fast ssd some justice!

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect product for us

Pros: We needed a solution to clone large sata hard drives to smaller ssd hardrives to optomize performance of these desktops. despite concerns the product matched with a Kingston 240gb sst transfered 120gb's of data from the old hard drive to the ssd in 22 minutes with absolutely no errors, and no need to repartition the source drive. 30 minutes from start to finish.

Cons: Would have enjoyed additional information on the Apricorn website.

Other Thoughts: Prior to my order I called the manufacturer to answer a few of my questions, they put my mind at ease.
