works well, could be better
- Pros: adds cooling
adds 4 hot swap bays(if you buy the brackets seperatly) adds a 120mm intake fan
- Cons: not universal
had to modify my case in order to get the fan to clip in, it involved cutting some around where the old drive bay covers were.
- Other Thoughts: It would be nice if there were something like this (removable trays) that is universal for the same price.
Specific Design
- Pros: Nice cage. The trays are plastic but they are effective for the purpose of holding a hard drive. The rubber grommets for the HDD screws prevent vibration noise in the chassis. The fan mount has a neat design.
- Cons: That neat design comes with a caveat: the fan does not attach directly to the cage it self, rather relying on the ability to mount to the front bezel. Both of the cases I had considered it for cannot take the fan and thus defeats part of the reason I bough it.
- Other Thoughts: Despite it's particular design, it is a wonderful cage and suits my needs for now. It has spurned an idea for me that will hopefully result in the purchase of two more of these cages to be mounted in a custom built case for a file server. :D
Nice HDD cage capable of hot plug/hot swap
- Pros: Holds 4 HDDs where several competitors' cages hold only 3 in the same number of bays. Has a slide out tray for each drive - don't have to remove the whole cage to rearrange the drives - once it's in, it's in. Elastomer bushings in each tray help to keep the noise down. Fan holder doesn't have wires to mess with unless you want to install a better fan. Inexpensive at under thirty Washingtons. Under another twenty to add the extra hot plug/swap connectors.
- Cons: As Newegg fails to disclose, this cage is designed specifically for the Silverstone Kublai series of cases (this is mentioned on the product page at the Silverstone site, but they do misspell "Kublai" in their description - linked from the Newegg page). I came up with the name "Kublai Kage" (tm) for it, but SST doesn't seem to want to buy the name from me. IAC, the fan mount can be modded to work with most cases. The plastic trays have excess plastic in the crosspieces that blocks air flow - this too can be remedied with a bit of work. Lacks a filter. The metal "mesh" that covers the front of the fan holder acts as a de facto filter and looks a mess after a short time in our old, leaky house. I remove the mesh (very easy with a thin-bladed knife or similar) and install a real filter assembly. Both looks more purposeful and is easier to keep clean.
- Other Thoughts: Currently the least expensive hot plug/hot swap solution that can fairly easily be made to work with almost any case. And even if you don't need the hot plug/swap feature, it's still the best and most convenient HDD cage available for the money.
