The Define R4 is the latest in the Define series of silent computer cases. Building on the award-winning foundation of the Define R3, the R4 retains minimalistic yet elegant styling with extraordinary performance, noise reduction features, premium build quality and unparalleled value in this price range while adding a suite of innovative new features.

No longer are you forced to choose between silence and support for liquid cooling, the Define R4 offers both. Top fan positions now allow slim 240 radiators to be mounted internally and select slim radiators can also be mounted in the front fan holder. An integrated fan controller is easily accessible behind the front panel, putting fan control at your fingertips. Cable management and intelligent layout are taken to new levels with the option of mounting up to two 2.5in, SSDs on the reverse side of the motherboard tray, effectively mitigating visible cable clutter. When it comes to cable routing, the Define R4 has it covered. Over one full inch of cable routing space behind the motherboard plate has been achieved by widening the case by just 8mm.

This mid-tower case is a great choice for everything from gaming enthusiast systems to silent home theater and corporate applications. The R4 comes pre-fitted with dense noise absorbing bitumen material on the front, top and side panels. The exclusive ModuVent TM System provides three panels which also have noise-absorbing material; these panels can be removed to expose three air vents for additional fans for high air flow applications. Rubber padding on the case feet, anti-vibration pads for the power supply and HDDs also help reduce noise.

Configuration flexibility is enhanced thanks to two hard drive cages (featuring steel drive trays with black silicone mounting grommets) that support a total of eight 3.5in. HDDs or 2.5in. SSDs.  The top five-bay cage is easily rotatable and removable; removing the top cage allows support for graphics cards up to 470mm in length. The bottom three-bay cage is mounted to the chassis by screws instead of rivets, allowing you to easily remove both drive cages for complete flexibility. The spacious sleek black interior can support CPU coolers up to 170mm high. If cooling becomes more of a priority, this system can support up to seven fans with removable, washable filters to provide airflow from five sides of the case. The case also includes cable routing cutouts with improved rubber grommets to ensure greater fit and retention. The bottom of the case has a filter over the power supply and 120/140mm intake fan vent which can be easily removed for cleaning.

  • newegg Optimized for Noise Reduction Pre-fitted with dense noise-absorbing material, the R4 also features ModuVent panels which prevent noise from escaping unused fan vents when silence is required. 5 out of 5 eggsGreat case!

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 with Window Black Pearl Silent ATX Mid Tower Case

Pros: Looks great, quiet, lots of storage options, able to accommodate a ton of fans.

Cons: Front filter and fan tray somewhat awkward to maneuver.

Other Thoughts: The R5 just came out and looks to have addressed the front filter and fan tray issue.

5 out of 5 eggsLovely case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 with Window Black Pearl Silent ATX Mid Tower Case

Pros: Looks beautiful on the outside and even more so on the inside. The level of intelligence that went into making this case is astounding.
1) Reduces any noise coming from inside my computer.
2) The front is gorgeous.
3) Fan controller works like a charm.

Cons: no cons

Other Thoughts: The fan controller has 3 fan cables, which means you can plug up to 3 fans.

3 out of 5 eggsDebatable "satisfaction"...

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 with Window Black Pearl Silent ATX Mid Tower Case

Pros: I am a "verified owner" of the Blackout version with window (bought at Newegg), which is the exact same chassis but with different colors...

PROS:
Well built, sturdy, quiet, nice monolithic design, excellent clearance for cable management, every part you can accommodate (read the "cons" and a simple solution in "Other Thoughts"), will fit well and strong.

For any build not requiring a decent water cooling (e.g. anything that has 240mm or 280mm radiator), and not requiring expansions in the front bay that are protruding (even slightly), well this can be an excellent choice that I would recommend.

Cons: 1) As opposed to what's advertised, this chassis WILL NOT accommodate any decent 240mm or 280mm radiators on the top (thus anywhere inside the case), unless you don't need any HDD (removing both HDD cages for a vertical radiator mounting), or mod the case with a drill for a top mount (read "Other Thoughts" where I explain the basic design flaw and the solution), unless you have a cheap and/or "oldy" motherboard without any Power heatsink.

2) Cheap HDD mounting rubbers - They did not provide the correct screws for HDD mounting over the rubbers : head is not large enough and length should be slightly longer. The supplied screws tear open those rubbers which are of cheap quality.

3) Considering point 1), modding the chassis so as to accommodate a radiator broke the clean looks. This should not happen since it was advertised as being compatible with 240/280mm rads...

4) The front-panel's door flushes with the 5.25" bay area, thus I could not install an expansion for a swappable SSD/HDD enclosure which is slightly protruding and making it impossible to close the door (even the tiny fan switch has a hole in the door for allowing the later to be closed). A 1cm clearance would've been welcome (I couldn't see this via the pictures before hand).

5) Front panel - The I/O ports are assembled in the front panel instead of the chassis armature, thus that front panel can't be completely removed, and wires are much too short resulting in useless modularity. The plastic panel covering the filter feels cheap and flimsy, I could have done without it, or with a more robust material if not a simpler design. The front door also feels like cheap plastic but it looks good. The filter itself can be removed easily though, no cons there. No eggs removed for this even though I could (it must be for the fact that they are Nordics like me, and that I want to encourage any company that's not a traitor by having moved its manufactures in "Slavery-camps-China" for building cheap disposable guyzmos ;-P ).

Other Thoughts: The design flaw (as you'll understand, the solution is much simpler than adding height to the chassis) - With the R4 line they've added clearance behind the motherboard, for cable management. Which of course enlarged the top panel. However, since the motherboard's position didn't change, then they shouldn't have changed the position of the top fan mounting holes : they left it centered on the top panel. Which is a design flaw, since moving the mounting holes towards the right panel of the case (to keep them centered on a larger top panel), has also removed the required clearance for any water cooling radiator mounting, from then on invariably bumping onto any motherboard Power heatsink that's above the CPU (most gen 4/5 mobos have that heatsink, except for a tiny number of really cheap mobos that you wouldn't want to put in such chassis). A simple solution that I did was to drill new mounting holes : this chasis has cost me much more in the end, in terms of time and money (and a couple of minutes of aggravation). But I feel like a happy camper now... Somewhat, the looks is broken.

5 out of 5 eggsTerrific case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 with Window Black Pearl Silent ATX Mid Tower Case

Pros: This case is exactly as advertised. Its spacious, versatile, and extremely quiet. The sound-dampening blanking plates that cover unused fan mounts are a wonderful idea.

Cons: If I have one complaint, I didn't realise when I bought the case that the removable HDD cage holds 5 of the 3.5" 8 trays. I had specifically wanted a case that would hold 4 trays, and this one won't unless I leave both cages in place (which isn't feasible with a big video card).

But since you can mount 2 SSDs behind the motherboard, this is only ever a problem if you want to had more than 3 3.5" HDDs at the same time, and you have a really big video card. So not a substantive failing of the case.

Other Thoughts: The documentation, particularly with regard to the wiring from the front panel, isn't particularly helpful.

4 out of 5 eggsDefine R4 is everything you need and more.

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 with Window Black Pearl Silent ATX Mid Tower Case

Pros: Great design. Easy to set up. Has 2 fans and comes with easy to clean filters which can help prevent dust from entering the case.

Cons: Window is dust magnet. Legs not the same height so it wobbles if pressure is placed on corners. No instructions

Other Thoughts: Happy with my purchase! R4 is a smooth looking beast.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome case to build with

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 with Window Black Pearl Silent ATX Mid Tower Case

Pros: *Very roomy and easy to work with...plenty of room for cable management.
*Cooling is very good.
*Quiet computing.
* Very sturdy side panels with sound dampening material
* Fan controller works great
* Nice solid window
* Built-in front fan intake Filters easy to remove & clean

Cons: * # 1 complaint with this case is that the top and bottom are kinda flimsy...thin metal.
* I would recommend not installing fans in top or bottom of case, but I do recommend installing one extra intake fan and removing one of the hdd cages if you can to improve airflow.
* SSD mounts require motherboard removal if you're going to add one later (so make sure you mount BEFORE installing motherboard.
* PSU fan filter is long and a pain to remove if you have no access to the back of the system (most case manufacture's use this setup, so not really a con)...would have been better to use a smaller filter or a way to slide it in & out from the front of the case.

Other Thoughts: I really like this case, but do wish it had thicker steel on top & bottom of case (especially the top)...if you install a fan in the top, you will see what I mean. (better to leave sound dampening material installed instead of installing fans). But I did not deduct an egg for this as it was only $89.99 with free shipping...You absolutely cannot go wrong at this price...but I would have been willing to pay $20-$30 more for thicker steel,,,then it would be a perfect case for me!

Pros: 1. Size - perfect to house powerful hardware without being cramped. 2. Build quality - the steel is strong, the finish is great. Looks and feels like a quality piece. 3. Side window - big enough to show off the goodies, but still cover up the uglies!

Cons: Fan controller is Molex plug. Would like to see a SATA version. Power LED is blue. Would LOVE to see a white one. If you mount a 240mm radiator on top, it HAS to have slim fans or you will have to mod it.

Other Thoughts: This is my THIRD Fractal R4. I have had 2 white ones (1 windowed, 1 non-windowed), and this black pearl one. I got the black one because the price was right for my new build, but I also knew I was getting a quality piece. The materials are high quality (padded sides, STEEL drive trays and cages, rubber feet). It's a little plain looking (Scandinavian minimalist design) but at least it's not all plastic and covered with obnoxious 1337 Gamerz LEDs and such. It's clean and classy.
