The Grandia GD04 is an incredible product that combines years of SilverStone expertise in SFF (Small form factor) and HTPC (Home Theater Personal Computer) chassis design. It has a beautifully proportioned exterior and powerful thermal capability that rivals the best tower chassis.

From the front, the GD04 is shaped similarly to most home theater components, but the depth was reduced to a mere 323mm. This overall size of 21.5 liters in volume actually makes the case one liter smaller than SilverStone’s own Micro-ATX Sugo cases! Even though GD04’s diminutive size allows it to easily integrate into any home theater cabinet, it can still accommodate an impressive list of standard components such as 5.25” optical drive, two 3.5” hard drives, a 2.5” SSD, a standard ATX power supply, and two high-end graphics cards up to 11 inches. Cooling duty in the GD04 is handled by three filtered 120mm fans designed with the same positive air pressure as the Fortress FT01, this enables class-leading cooling efficiency, reduced dust buildup, and silent operation.

To make installation simpler, there is even enough space for cable management to be easily accomplished without the need for short cabled or modular power supply. Coupled with special attention given to the order of installation, any user can quickly assemble or upgrade the GD04 and devote more time to enjoying a personalized digital life with an HTPC.

  • newegg HTPC System with 5 Drive Bays Featuring an external 5.25" drive bays, three 3.5" drive bays and two 2.5’’ drive bays (or two 3.5" drive bay and three 2.5’’ drive bays), the SilverStone GRANDIA GD04B provides excellent expandability as a HTPC case.
  • newegg Efficient Ventilation The Silverstone Grandia GD04B features two 120mm right side intake fans and one 120mm left side intake fan for efficient ventilation and effective system cooling.
  • newegg Convenient Front I/O Panel The Silverstone Grandia GD04B features a convenient front I/O panel for easy access to one audio and two USB 2.0 ports.

Pros: * Great cooling system.
* The case is designed to reduce the noise of the hard drive.
* Holes to fix the wire ties.

Cons: * Fans are too loud for an HTPC. Consider replacing them.
* Takes many steps to access to a component.
* You need to glue the furnished front panel for optic drive on the that comes with your drive, even nearly all drives use the same system to fix it to their sliding plate.
* The manual is badly translated.
* With the optical drive installed, you do not have a lot of space for the CPU fan.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Case

Pros: A very sturdy case with all metal construction. Feels good, looks good, does everything a case ought to do. Components fit snugly and ventilation is great. No exhaust fans necessary as the intake fans are enough to force enough air in to keep even high end processors and video cards cool. The air filters are highly effective at keeping dust and pet hair out of the case.

Cons: Not Quiet. With music or a movie playing at moderate volume, the fan noise is not noticeable but in a quiet room it will not go unnoticed. No USB-3.0 on front panel. No window for IR sensor (although with smart-phone remote apps maybe not so big a deal).

Other Thoughts: I very much like this case. Its front panel looks very handsome and the whole thing is built well. I have owned it for a year and took it apart just a few weeks ago to clear any cat-hair and dust out, only to find that there was no dust or hair at all. The filters work great and the system stays very cool due to the fact that it is small with great airflow; there is nowhere for heat to build-up. A low profile heat sync is a must and a modular power supply is highly recommended.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you very much for purchasing and using a SilverStone! Please note that the GD04 does come with USB 3.0 front panel connectors, but your motherboard must have a 19pin USB 3.0 header for them to work. If you do not have USB 3.0 header on your motherboard, you may purchase a USB 3.0 add-on card that provides 19pin header such as SilverStone EC01-P in the link below to make GD04's USB 3.0 work:

2 out of 5 eggsLooks Nice, Solid, Compact

Pros: Nice look, metal construction that matches components well, small size allows it to fit nicely on component rack as well. Looks durable and likely to last. Fans keep the system cool and are quiet enough I shouldn't hear them at all from the couch.

Cons: Defective reset button, when connected to motherboard they system would not post. This added about two hours time to build when considering troubleshooting, time spent with support and installing the replacement switch silverstone mailed to me.

Other Thoughts: Bad QC, should never have to deal with issues like this when spending over $ 100 on a case, I don't like wasting my time in this manner.

5 out of 5 eggsnice

Pros: Well made, fans run quietly.

Cons: Aligning the optical drive cover is a pain.

Other Thoughts: Like others commented, if your optical drive has a curved surface on the door, it is even harder to get the door cover aligned properly. One thing that helped me was to cut the supplied double-sided tape into two pieces.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Case

Pros: Clean look - quality brushed aluminum
Muted front LED (instead of being blinding brights like most cases)
Plenty of ventilation

Cons: Awkward mounting of the 5.5 inch drive (BD Player) - requires it removed to reach anything important on the mobo.

Other Thoughts: I would have liked to see a different HDD mounting configuration behind the power supply as to get the HDDs in the path of airflow.
Other than that, this is a very nice addition to a media center.

5 out of 5 eggsNICE!

Pros: Nicely made, and assembled. There is a ton of room in this thing, especially for the small footprint. I've got a lot of gear in this case see other thoughts). This thing looks great next to my Yamaha receiver (same brushed aluminum finish). Nice, dim power/HDD light on the front.

Great cable management; plenty of room for a huge power supply; most PS should fit whether modular or not. The space under the HDD mounts and BD player is wide open, so you can neatly bundle excess cables there. If you get a large PS, you may want to go modular, but smaller PS's shouldn't have to be.

Cons: The screws come fully tightened and assembled. You must remove all of these for a build, and several of the screws were borderline on being rounded out.

For reference, I used a ASUS BD player. It has a rounded front so that made installing the optical drive trim piece very challenging.

Other Thoughts: This is the first time I've seen 'Made in China' proudly stamped in large letters in anything... usually sneak it in somewhere due to embarrasment. But, we all know that some very high quality computer parts (and other things) are made there. Just thought that was neat.

Here's my build:

Biostar A880G+ mATX
8 GB Patriot 1600 memory with heat spreaders
AMD 960T w/ stock cooler; 6 cores OC to 3.4 GHz
1.5 TB HDD, 500 GB HDD for storage
ASUS BD player
Sapphire HD 6850 video card
Cougar 700W silver modular PS (it's huge)

5 out of 5 eggsNice HTPC Case

Pros: Depth is perfect. Fits in any Home Theatre case. Alot of the others are too long. Nicely built. Easy wire management.

Cons: No Card reader on front. I knew this buyin it, but I could not find a nice looking shallow case that had a card reader.

Other Thoughts: Be sure to use a modular PSU if you have multipal HDD/SDD and a GPU card. Keeps things much cleaner and open when you only have the wires you need.

5 out of 5 eggsGood platform

Pros: Sturdy, Ventilation, Cable routing/tie downs are nice, Clean front face

Cons: Not sure if the SATA cables came with the case, but the angled ones don't fit very well with my setup (SSD mounted to top) so I had to trade for straight SATA cables.

Other Thoughts: Haven't booted up the system yet, but figured the case can be reviewed at this point.

AMD A6-3500 Llano
OCZ Solid 3 SLD3-25SAT3-120G
SeaSonic X series SS-400FL 400W Fanless Power Supply
ZALMAN CNPS8900 Quiet 110mm cpu cooler
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)

5 out of 5 eggsVery good htpc case for the $

Pros: Very tidy size (one of the few cases les than 15" deep)
Very solid construction
Clean lines, nice real aluminum front (not plastic)
Enough room for good mid range gpu (GTX 460)
Quiet fans
LEDs not too bright

Cons: Tight fit (of course)
No standoff mount points for back edge of some micro atx mobos (plug in any pets on this edge before you assemble the mobo)
No usb 3.0

Other Thoughts: Very happy overall. I had my system in an atx mid tower, but wanted to integrate it into my entertainment center, amd this case was well reviewed, and within my budget, plus it fit on my 15" deep shelf, unlike most other htpc cases (seriously, who has an 18" deep entertainment rack?).

After some thoughtful cable routing (utilizing the many handy cable tiedown spots), I was able to fit everything in nicely, with some room left for ventilation. Very pleased, amd will definitely add Silverstone to my short list next time I need to build a new case.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HTPC case

Pros: Lots of fans
Solidly built
Nice design - looks classy
Removable hard drive tray
Space enough to work in

Cons: Cable guides don't have one side open--how am I supposed to get cables through those?
Optical drive rack will not fit in with some large heatsink/fan combos (namely this one:
If you aren't installing an optical drive, there's not really a good way to attach the optical drive door bezel. I jerry rigged it with the provided tape and it looks okay.. but not perfect

Other Thoughts: One of the standoffs for the motherboard was half an inch off for this mother board:
