Categories > Rackmount NAS > Synology Inc. > Synology RS812RP+ Diskless System High-performance & Scalable 4-bay Rackmounted NAS Server for SMB Users

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Awesome
Pros: iSCSI works great with vSphere 4.1
Easy to use web interface.
Several optional add-on apps for functionality. I like that they're not just all automatically installed like bloatware.
Cons: Installation didn't go so well. I popped in all my 4 TB drives and went through the install. It choked and told me to open up port 23 (telnet) on my router and call support. I didn't like that option, so I google'd it. It turns out, you should do the initial install with one hard drive in the system. Once you go through installation and have it up and running. Add the other drives and build your raid.
Other Thoughts: This box is working great for our needs and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

Categories > Rackmount NAS > Qnap > QNAP TS-870U-RP-US Rackmount Network Storage

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Fantastic NAS Device
Pros: - Capacity
- Form Factor
- Expandability
- Price / Value
- Flexibility
- Stability
Cons: - No SFTP support in client mode
Other Thoughts: This is a great NAS appliance. It can do so many things on your network and has such a fantastic, intuitive web interface. We love it and keep finding uses for it. The only drawback, and it is a BIG one (minus one egg from an otherwise 5 egg product) is the lack of support for SFTP in Real Time Remote Replication (RTRR). RTRR let's you pick "FTP" as the transport method for replication, but SFTP is not one of the choices. This is a very common protocol and there is no solution for it at this time.
BUY IT NOW if you need anything in this ballpark, UNLESS you have SFTP on your must-have list.

Still waiting for an update to support SFTP, QNAP developers! Let's get that rolling, please.

Categories > Rackmount NAS > Synology Inc. > Synology RS212 Diskless System RackStation Feature-rich 2-bay NAS Server for Workgroups and Offices

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Amazing !!!
Pros: This is not just a NAS, its so much more! There are more features than you can shake a stick at. You can run it as almost any kind of server imaginable. Plus there are different apps and packages you can install on the fly to provide all sorts of services. Setup is super simple! The setup installs the DSM software (OS) that operates it. When you login it looks like a GUI Linux desktop. Navigation is very easy and well laid out. Configuring it is a breeze. This isn't like other typical hardware that you sign into some cheezy firmware interface. What's really cool is the motherboard is an easily replaceable module that pops in and out very easily should it ever need replaced in the future. In the $500+ price range I thought I was taking a gamble. Boy did it pay off! When you realize what all you are really getting its well worth the money. You just can't go wrong with this piece of hardware.
Cons: None.

You just can't go wrong with this piece of hardware. If you are looking for a NAS with so much more, look no further than the Synology Rackstation!

Categories > Rackmount NAS > Synology Inc. > Synology RS2212+ Diskless System 2U High performance NAS Server Scales up to 22 Drives for Enterprise Users

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Wish I had the time and need to use more of the features
Pros: I have had this unit in operation for a few months now. It has run flawlessly during that time. I filled it with 3 TB Western Digital WD3000FYYZ drives and set them up in a RAID 6.

The NAS is easy to set up. Active Directory integration was a breeze unlike some of the NAS devices I have used over the years. Transfers are as fast as I would expect on a 1 Gbps network.

I use this for workstation images. I run about 60 workstation backups to it daily using StorageCraft.
Cons: I wish I had paid more attention and purchased the RP model with redundant power supplies. Certainly not a short coming of the device though!
Other Thoughts: I have used several Synology NAS products over the years in client deployments. Use cases ranged mostly to backup storage for image and Veeam backups. It is great to finally have one for my own infrastructure. I really would like to pick up a smaller one for the house and take advantage of the extended feature set. I guess everyone knows what to get me for Christmas now ;D

Categories > Rackmount NAS > Synology Inc. > Synology RS2212RP+ Diskless System 2U High performance NAS Server Scales up to 22 Drives for Enterprise Users

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Second time was the charm!
Pros: It works and right away you've got to be excited about that! The one I sent back was not working out and this one proves it was the unit and not the user.
Cons: Can still be a little clunky at times but for what I'm using it for (backup location for Zmanda/Amanda backup software), it works just fine. Moreover, I have it full of 2-TB Western Digital Green HDDs so I'm sure I could bump up the performance if I bumped up to better drives - 7200 RPM drives should increase the speed of things....
Other Thoughts: Even with the WD Green HDDs, I experimented with using it as an NFS-mounted data-store for ESXi 5.1. It worked pretty well. I wasn't running any high-performance guests and I didn't have more than a few guests running on it at a time so I can't speak for how well it would work for a larger VMware setup. I wouldn't mind getting another one and seeing how many low-performance guests (back-office stuff like Dokuwiki, Wordpress, WSUS, WDS, etc.) I could run on it. I still plan on getting another one to keep offsite so I can have remote (cloud) storage for my backup solution. (I'm currently trying to retire our old backup solution that uses removable HDDs and Iron Mountain.) I also plan on replacing our Win 2008 Server file-server with one of these although I don't know that I'll fill up all the bays.

Categories > Rackmount NAS > Thecus > Thecus N16000 NAS Server | Enterprise - Rackmount

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Amazing
Pros: Amazing device. Supports almost every kind of technology. iscsi, nfs, cifs, ftp, etc.
You can bond the 3 on board NICs to help your throuput.
We installed an HP 10GB nic, but had to custom build the driver to get it to work.
Supports SSF drives, and normal sata/sas

Drive trays are very solid, and comes with twice as many screws as you need.
Nice simply LCD screen on the front lets you change the NIC to DHCP easily.
Cons: You Have to remove about 10 screws to get the case off to install a card inside.
Other Thoughts: installed 16 4TB SAS drives in a raid 6. Very fast, plenty of storage.

This device could easily be a SAN replacement

Categories > Rackmount NAS > Synology Inc. > Synology RS812 Diskless System RackStation Feature-rich 4-bay NAS Server for Workgroups and Offices

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Great product
Pros: Removed from box, installed drives, installed the OS and had iSCSI target working within 30 minutes. Very easy to use. I removed a disk while the unit was on after the raid was built and during a test data transfer to the iSCSI target. The NAS continued operating and sent me emails warning me of the failure. My transfer was not interrupted. When I reinserted the drive, it started a rebuild after I used the web interface to confirm the new drive. Very nice interface and feature set for the price range.
Cons: Takes a long time to rebuild an array if a disk is downed, nearly 48 hours with 3TB drives.
Other Thoughts: Installing the OS was a little unusual, had to load an image from the CD that matched the model I had bought. It took about 15 to 20 minutes to transfer but that may have been due to the array being built for the first time. I was really happy to see a Mac client that ran on my 10.8 based system without any issue as well as a Windows package.

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 I hope I got a bad unit!
Pros: Cheap storage with RAID capabilities. Takes standard HDDs or SSDs.
Cons: This thing was messed up from the start. I hope I got a bad unit and that's the only reason. I've since submitted an RMA for a replacement unit. I've set up several other Synology devices and all have been very nice and easy to work with. This one timed out during the setup process. It times out during most mundane tasks once you're logged in. It timed out while setting up the NICs and I had to factory reset it. However, one of the NICs still had the static IP on it while the other had been reset like a factory reset is supposed to do. I told it to reboot but it wouldn't. I told it to shutdown but it wouldn't. When I finally got it to reboot, it took 10-15 minutes for it to come back up. It complains of bad sectors on the internal HDD but I can't replace it so it there's nothing I can do about. It complained about bad sectors on my HDDs in the array but I replaced those and all was well - or so it said. Right now, I can't even get to my NFS/CIFS share even though the interface says every thing fine. I can get to the root share but it times out when you try to go deeper.

I put in a support ticked with Synology and all they take all day to get back to me. I put in the ticket on Monday morning but I didn't get their reply 'til after I went home for the day. Then I replied back and the same thing happened today - their retort after I've put in my 9 hours and went home. The wanted me to check network setting anc cables but, again, I've done this before. We use this station to set up all kinds of servers and never have any issues. Then they wanted me to get them a debug log. Per their directions, I went to grab it. However, the browser has been spinning - assuming it's still waiting on whatever command I gave it - for over 30 minutes! I cannot wait on their support to get back to me every 24 hours. I'm sending this back...
Other Thoughts: Like I've said, I've used Synology products before and I like their stuff - so long as it works. This unit has been nothing but trouble and their support has less than responsive. I'm just glad it's not in production yet. I'll wait for my RMA replacement in hopes that it'll be in better shape.

Categories > Rackmount NAS > Qnap > QNAP TS-412U-US Turbo NAS

Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2 Just not worth it
Pros: Web interface is well-designed and really easy to use. There are a lot of compelling features on this device.
Cons: We have 3 QNAP devices, two of these and one of a higher model, and they are hands down the worst purchase decision we ever made. They frequently mark drives as "Read/Write Error". There's nothing really wrong with the drivers, but you have to pull them out and run the drive manufacturer's fix and erase tools, then you have to put the drives back in and wait three-four days for them to rebuild. Then about a month later, a different drive will have the same issue. This is if you're lucky. If you're not lucky, putting the drive back in will cause the unit to panic and mark the entire array as "unknown". Just accept that your data is lost at that point. Trying anything else will probably result in the device being completely blown out and you doing a complicated firmware restore procedure.
Other Thoughts: I'm not sure who else is in the market at this price point, but do yourself a favor and find out who they are.
